Overview

ISO 17871:2020/FDAmd 2:2026 is an international amendment standard focused on quick-release cylinder valves for gas cylinders. Developed by ISO Technical Committee 58, Subcommittee 2, this amendment refines the requirements for the specification and type testing of these crucial components. The standard clarifies and updates key testing procedures, marking requirements, and references to associated standards, ensuring continued safety and harmonization in the use of quick-release valves within various industries.

Quick-release cylinder valves are essential safety and operational features, allowing for rapid connection and disconnection of gas cylinders in critical contexts, such as fire-fighting systems and industrial gas supply. This amendment ensures these valves meet up-to-date safety, reliability, and performance benchmarks in line with the latest international standards.

Key Topics

  • Scope Clarification: Specifies that the document covers quick-release cylinder valves only as closures-other integrated functions are beyond the scope and are handled by related standards.
  • Updates to Normative References: Aligns requirements with recent editions of related standards, such as ISO 10297:2024, ISO 17879:2026, and ISO 23826, harmonizing testing and product marking.
  • Leak-tightness and Pressure Testing:
    • Clarifies obligations for internal and external leak tightness testing.
    • Sets maximum allowable external leakage limits.
    • Details appropriate pressures and cycles for hydraulic and endurance testing.
  • Special Provisions for Fire-Fighting Systems: Addresses unique requirements for quick-release valves used in fixed fire-fighting systems, referencing ISO 16003 and EN 12094-4 for further details.
  • Marking Requirements: Mandates durable product markings via permanent methods (e.g., laser etching, engraving), with specific information and standardized marking conventions.
  • Test Harmonization: Ensures procedural consistency for test pressure terminology and protocols, supporting compatibility across related ISO standards.

Applications

The provisions and updates in ISO 17871:2020/FDAmd 2 enhance the practical value of the standard in a range of real-world settings where quick-release cylinder valves are used:

  • Fixed Fire-Fighting Systems: Ensures that valves integrated into fire suppression provisions in buildings, wind turbines, ships, and oil platforms meet robust safety and performance criteria.
  • Industrial Gas Distribution: Supports industries requiring quick-disconnect features in their gas supply lines by standardizing valve requirements and testing approaches.
  • Safety and Compliance: Assists manufacturers, inspectors, and facility operators in verifying valve integrity through harmonized type testing and clear marking rules.
  • International Trade: By harmonizing requirements with updated European and global standards, the amendment facilitates cross-border acceptance and regulatory compliance for cylinder valves.
  • Maintenance and Retrofit Activities: Guides servicing organizations in verifying valve conformity after manufacture or during cylinder refurbishment.

Related Standards

To ensure a comprehensive approach, ISO 17871:2020/FDAmd 2 should be used in conjunction with the following standards, which provide detailed requirements for design, testing, and associated integrated functions:

  • ISO 10297:2024 - Gas cylinder valves - Specification and type testing
  • ISO 17879:2026 - Gas cylinders - Self-closing cylinder valves - Specification and type testing
  • ISO 23826:2021 - Gas cylinders - Ball valves - Specification and type testing
  • ISO 16003 - Fixed fire-fighting systems - Cylinder valve requirements
  • EN 12094-4 - Fixed firefighting systems - Components for gas extinguishing systems - Requirements and test methods for automated quick-release valves
  • ISO 15996 - Gas cylinders - Residual pressure valves - Specification and type testing

Summary

The amendment ISO 17871:2020/FDAmd 2:2026 delivers improved clarity and harmonization for manufacturers, testing bodies, and end users of quick-release cylinder valves, strengthening safety, compliance, and interoperability across the global gas cylinder industry. By staying aligned with the latest normative references and updating key technical requirements, this ISO standard remains a vital resource for ensuring best practices in valve specification, testing, and marking.
