Overview
ISO 8287:2021 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies requirements for unalloyed cast magnesium. This fourth edition, released in June 2021, provides clear guidelines on the chemical composition, classification, designation, testing, marking, packing, transportation, storage, and associated quality documentation for unalloyed magnesium produced by the silicon-thermo or molten salt electrolysis processes. The standard helps ensure consistent quality and purity for commercial applications by specifying detailed chemical composition limits and procedures agreed upon between manufacturers and purchasers.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Focused on cast unalloyed magnesium with a minimum purity of 99% mass fraction, used in a variety of industrial contexts.
- Chemical Composition: Defines multiple grades of magnesium with precise maximum impurity limits for elements such as aluminum, manganese, iron, copper, nickel, lead, tin, sodium, calcium, and zinc. New grades-ISO Mg99.95C, Mg99.995A, Mg99.995B, and Mg99.995C-offer enhanced purity options.
- Manufacture and Sampling: Production methods are unspecified but sampling for chemical analysis is standardized with samples taken at the time of melt pouring.
- Testing and Acceptance: Criteria for inspection, batch definition, and testing are outlined. Testing methods require manufacturer-purchaser agreement to verify conformity to composition requirements.
- Marking and Packing: Detailed requirements for indelible marking of ingots and bundles ensure traceability. Packaging protocols protect product integrity during transportation and storage.
- Documentation and Quality Assurance: Includes guidelines for declaration of conformity, quality certificates, and complaint handling to address product defects impacting performance.
Applications
ISO 8287:2021 serves critical roles in industries requiring high-purity magnesium castings such as:
- Automotive and Aerospace: Lightweight, high-purity magnesium parts enhance fuel efficiency and structural performance.
- Electronics and Electrical Engineering: Use in components where magnesium’s electrical and thermal properties are required.
- Pharmaceutical and Food Processing: Compliance with limits on hazardous elements like cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and chromium ensures suitability.
- Metallurgy and Foundry: Standardizes material quality for further alloying or manufacturing processes.
- Research and Development: Provides a reliable baseline for studies involving unalloyed magnesium materials.
Related Standards
- EN 12421:2017: The European counterpart, which ISO 8287 aligns with, offers classifications of unalloyed magnesium grades identical to those specified in this standard.
- ISO 80000-1:2009: Governs quantities, units, and rounding rules applied to chemical composition reporting.
- Other ISO/TC 79 Documents: Cover various light metals and alloys offering complementary standards on manufacturing, testing, and quality requirements for magnesium alloys.
Keywords: ISO 8287:2021, unalloyed magnesium, magnesium chemical composition, cast magnesium, magnesium purity standards, magnesium alloy classification, magnesium testing, magnesium marking and packing, magnesium transportation and storage, magnesium quality certificate, magnesium industry standard.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/ patents).

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 79, Light metals and their alloys,
Subcommittee SC 5, Magnesium and alloys of cast or wrought magnesium.
This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 8287:2011), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared with the previous edition are as follows:
a) in the Introduction and Clause 2, EN 12421:1998 has been replaced by EN 12421:2017;
b) four new grades of cast unalloyed magnesium have been added in Table 1, namely ISO Mg99,95C,
ISO Mg99,995A, ISO Mg99,995B and ISO Mg99,995C.
