Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 8138 was prepared by ISO/TC 131, Fluid power systems, Subcommittee SC 3, Cylinders.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8138:1986) which has been technically revised.

Introduction
In hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a liquid under pressure within an
enclosed circuit.
One component of such systems is the fluid power cylinder. This is a device which converts power into linear
mechanical force and motion. It consists of a movable element, i.e. a piston and piston rod, operating within a
cylindrical bore.

This International Standard establishes port dimensions for 16 MPa (160 bar ) compact series cylinders as
required for interchangeability of commonly used hydraulic cylinders.
NOTE — This International Standard allows manufacturers of hydraulic equipment, freedom in design of metric cylinders; it
does not restrict technical development but provides basic guidelines.
The compact series dimensions are most applicable to square head cylinders.
This International Standard will be incorporated into the next edition of ISO 6020-2.

Introduction
Dans les systèmes de transmissions hydrauliques, l'énergie est transmise et commandée par l’intermédiaire d’un
liquide sous pression circulant en circuit fermé.
L'un des composants de tels systèmes est le vérin hydraulique. C'est un appareil qui transforme l'énergie du fluide
en énergie mécanique agissant linéairement. Il est constitué d'un élément mobile, par exemple un piston et une tige
de piston, se déplaçant à l'intérieur d'un alésage cylindrique.

La présente Norme internationale prescrit les dimensions des orifices des vérins 16 MPa (160 bar ) série
compacte à simple tige permettant d´assurer l´interchangeabilité des vérins hydrauliques d´usage courant.
NOTE — La présente Norme internationale laisse aux fabricants d´équipements hydrauliques toute latitude quant à la
conception des vérins de la série métrique; elle ne restreint pas le progrès technique, tout en fixant des orientations générales
de base.
Les dimensions de la série compacte ne sont pas applicables aux vérins à tête carrée.
La présente Norme internationale sera incorporée dans la prochaine édition de l´ISO 6020-2.
