Overview
ISO 5451:2022 - "Ferrovanadium - Specification and conditions of delivery" defines the minimum specifications, delivery conditions and quality-control procedures for ferrovanadium commonly supplied for steelmaking and foundry use. The standard updates the 1980 edition and establishes grade designations, chemical composition ranges, particle-size classes, sampling and testing rules, and dispute-resolution (contradictory and arbitral) analysis procedures.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Applies to ferrovanadium used as a vanadium additive in steel and castings; intended to support international trade and consistent quality.
- Designation and chemical composition: Defines common grades such as FeV50, FeV60, FeV80 and their aluminium-containing variants (e.g., FeV50Al2.5). Each designation has a specified vanadium content range (e.g., FeV50 ≈ 48.0–55.0 % V; FeV60 ≈ 58.0–65.0 % V; FeV80 ≈ 77.0–83.0 % V). Limits for other elements and impurities (Al, Si, C, P, S, Mn, etc.) are specified per grade or agreed between purchaser and supplier.
- Particle size and physical form: Ferrovanadium may be supplied as lumps or crushed and screened particles. The standard defines particle-size classes and tolerances, sieving method reference (ISO 565) and that undersize/oversize limits are valid at the point of delivery.
- Consignment rules: Permits tapped, graded or blended lots; melts forming a consignment shall not differ in vanadium content by more than 2 % absolute.
- Testing, sampling and analysis: Sampling methods reference ISO 3713, ISO 4551 and ISO 4552-2; chemical analysis recommended per ISO 6467 (or equivalent agreed methods). Suppliers must supply an analysis certificate for vanadium (and other agreed elements). Procedures for purchaser sampling, contradictory analysis and arbitral analysis are defined.
- Dispatch and storage: Packaging, marking and transport follow international regulations; material should be free from extraneous contamination.
Applications
ISO 5451 is used by:
- Steelmakers and foundries specifying ferrovanadium grades for alloying and micro-alloying.
- Ferroalloy producers and traders for product specification, quality declarations and export contracts.
- Quality-control and analytical laboratories implementing sampling and analysis procedures.
- Procurement and supply chain teams to ensure consistent delivery, lot conformity and dispute resolution.
Keywords: ISO 5451, ferrovanadium specification, ferrovanadium standard, ferrovanadium particle size, ferrovanadium chemical composition, ferroalloys, steelmaking, foundry.
Related standards
Relevant references cited in ISO 5451 include ISO 4552‑2, ISO 8954 (parts 1–3), ISO 3713, ISO 4551, ISO 565 and ISO 6467 (methods for sampling, sieving and chemical analysis). These help implement the sampling, testing and vocabulary required by ISO 5451.
