Overview
SIST EN IEC 60335-2-32:2026/A11:2026 is a key European Standard developed by CLC covering safety requirements for household and similar electrical massage appliances. This document serves as Amendment A11 to EN IEC 60335-2-32:2026, incorporating specific updates to improve the safety and usability of appliances such as foot massagers, hand-held massagers, massage chairs, beds, pads, and belts. It specifies safety measures for appliances operating at voltages not exceeding 250 V for single-phase and 480 V for other appliances.
The standard aims to reduce the risk of hazards associated with the intended use of electric massage devices within domestic environments. It establishes criteria for designers, manufacturers, and conformity assessors to ensure products are compliant with current European safety directives.
Key Topics
Expanded Safety Considerations
The amendment addresses the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by massage appliances to all individuals-including children and people with disabilities-as well as domestic animals in households.Marking and Instruction Requirements
Clear guidelines are provided for the labeling and instructional materials of massage appliances. Notably, the document outlines:- The conditions under which persons with disabilities can use these appliances, with an emphasis on supervision and instruction.
- The need for supervision of children and domestic animals to prevent unintended use or accidents.
- Recommendations to keep appliances out of reach of children under 8 years and domestic animals.
- Restrictions on maintenance and cleaning by children.
Harmonization with Other Standards
SIST EN IEC 60335-2-32:2026/A11:2026 works in conjunction with the general requirements of EN IEC 60335-1 and references several related standards, ensuring a comprehensive approach to appliance safety.Updates to Normative References
The amendment includes relevant international publications such as IEC 60335-2-17 for flexible heating appliances and IEC 60584-1 for thermocouples, further supporting accurate testing and classification.
Applications
This standard is crucial for:
- Manufacturers: Assures that new and existing designs for massage appliances conform to European safety expectations, supporting CE marking and market entry.
- Testing and Certification Bodies: Provides precise criteria for conformity assessments and safety certification, fostering consumer protection.
- Product Designers: Informs the design and development of safer, more user-friendly massage products, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and those with disabilities.
- Importers and Retailers: Ensures due diligence in product selection, minimizing risk from non-compliant electrical massage appliances imported or distributed within the European Economic Area.
- Consumers: Enhances confidence in purchasing electrical massage devices that have been rigorously assessed for safety.
Related Standards
SIST EN IEC 60335-2-32:2026/A11:2026 references and aligns with several international and European standards, including:
- EN IEC 60335-1:2023: Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - General requirements.
- EN IEC 60335-2-17: Particular requirements for blankets, pads, clothing, and similar flexible heating appliances.
