EN 984:2001 (CEN) specifies a standardized laboratory method to determine the mass per unit area of the use surface of needled (aiguilleté) textile floor coverings where the use surface can be visually distinguished from the substrate. Approved December 2001 and superseding EN 984:1995, the standard defines sampling, conditioning, tooling (band‑knife shearing) and calculation procedures so results are comparable across manufacturers, test laboratories and specifications.

• Calculation: Determine area S (mm²) and compute the use‑surface mass per unit area from the mass difference (m1 − m2), converting to g/m² (mass difference × 10^6 / S). Report mean and CV.
