SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 is the Slovenian adoption of the ISO method for intercompatibility of basic dyes for acrylic fibres. It specifies how to compare a basic dye with reference basic dyes on acrylic fibres, so laboratories can judge how a dye behaves in mixture with other basic dyes during practical dyeing.

What does SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 specify?

SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 specifies a test method for determining the behaviour of a basic dye in relation to its compatibility with other basic dyes when applied to acrylic fibres. The method is aimed at dye selection and matching work where dye combinations must give level, predictable results.

The document is organized into these main clauses:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - Normative reference
  • Clause 3 - Principle
  • Clause 4 - Safety precautions
  • Clause 5 - Apparatus and materials
  • Clause 6 - Procedure
  • Clause 7 - Assessment
  • Clause 8 - Test report

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999?

SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 compares the dye under test with two five-step reference scales, one yellow and one blue. The assessor uses the scale that gives the greatest hue difference from the dye under test, because that makes changes in compatibility easier to see in practice.

How the test is set up

Clause 5 requires dyeing equipment that can work at a 40:1 liquor:goods ratio at constant temperature, together with analytical-grade reagents and grade 3 water from ISO 3696. In practice, this keeps the test conditions controlled so that the result reflects dye compatibility rather than variable equipment or water quality.

Clause 5.2 and Table 1 set out the reference dye series and their prescribed amounts. Clause 5 also notes that the dyeings are intended to be around half of 1/1 standard depth on most acrylic fibres, which helps make visual comparison easier.

How specimens are prepared and dyed

Clause 6 calls for 20 to 30 specimens in total, with four to six specimens for each dyebath. The specimens are pretreated for 10 min at about 95 C in 1 % acetic acid and 1 % sodium acetate at pH 4.5 +/- 0.2, then kept wet for dyeing. In practice, this standardizes the fibre before the compatibility check.

Clause 6.3 and 6.4 require five dyebaths, one for each reference dye, each containing the test dye, the reference dye, acetic acid and sodium acetate. The specimens are dyed one after another, and the last specimen in each bath is taken to complete exhaustion. That sequence shows how the dye behaves as the bath is depleted, which is the point of the method.

Clause 6 notes that the temperature can be adjusted between 90 C and 100 C and the dyeing time between 5 min and 10 min to achieve exhaustion on different acrylic fibres. This matters because acrylic fibres can vary in how quickly they take up dye.

How the result is read and reported

Clause 7 assigns the compatibility value from the reference dye that gives on-tone dyeings throughout the sequence from a bath. The result may fall between adjacent reference dyes, such as half-step values, or outside the scale as less than 1 or greater than 5. In practice, the method gives a usable compatibility rating rather than a simple pass/fail result.

Clause 8 requires the report to identify the standard used, describe the dye under test and the fibre tested, and state the compatibility value obtained. That makes the result traceable for quality control, supplier comparison, and production records.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 define?

  • Compatibility value - the rating assigned to the dye under test based on the reference dye that gives matching on-tone dyeings across the sequence.
  • Reference dye - one of the prescribed yellow or blue comparison dyes used to judge compatibility.
  • Basic dyes - the dye class being assessed by this method for use on acrylic fibres.
  • Acrylic fibres - the fibre type for which the test is specified.
  • liquor:goods ratio - the ratio of dye bath liquid to the mass of the fabric or fibre specimen.
  • omf - “on mass of fabric”, meaning the percentage is based on the mass of the fabric specimen.
  • On-tone dyeings - dyeings that visually match the reference tone well enough to indicate equivalent compatibility behaviour.
  • pH-value - the acidity level of the dyebath, controlled here during pretreatment and dyeing.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999?

SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 is used by textile test laboratories, dye manufacturers, acrylic fibre processors, and quality control teams. It supports dye selection, incoming material evaluation, troubleshooting of shade compatibility, and communication between suppliers and buyers when basic dyes are used on acrylic fibres.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999?

  • ISO 3696:1987 - provides the water quality specification used for grade 3 water in the test.
  • ISO 105-A01:1994 - the note points to this part for information on the source of the basic dye sets and 1/1 standard depths.

What does the SIST EN ISO 105-Z03:1999 document contain?

The document contains the full test method for comparing basic dyes on acrylic fibres, including the principle of the method, safety precautions, apparatus and materials, procedure, assessment, and test report requirements. Table 1 gives the yellow and blue reference dye sets and their compatibility values. Table 2 shows an example of how the sequence of dyeings is read to obtain a compatibility value. The procedure covers pretreatment, controlled dyeing, rinsing, drying, and visual assessment of the dyed specimens.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 105203 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOflC 38, Texti/es, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured textiles and
colorants.
IS0 105 was previously published in thirteen “parts”, each designated by a
letter (e.g. “Part A”), with publication dates between 1978 and 1985. Each
part contained a series of “sections”, each designated by the respective
part letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section AOI”). These
sections are now being republished as separate documents, themselves
designated “parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric designations. A
complete list of these parts is given in IS0 105-AOI .
