Non-fatty foods - Determination of dithiocarbamate and thiuram disulfide residues - Part 1: Spectrometric method

This European Standard specifies a spectrometric method for the determination of residues of dithiocarbamates and thiuram disulfides, which release carbon disulfide under the described conditions (e.g. mancozeb, maneb, propineb, thiram, zineb). It is applicable to such compounds in and on fruits and many vegetables  and also in and on cereals and other foodstuffs of plant origin. Only the quantification of the whole group is possible using this method but not the identification of individual compounds.

Overview

EN 12396-1:1998 is a European (CEN) standard that specifies a spectrometric method for the determination of residues of dithiocarbamates and thiuram disulfides in non‑fatty foods. The method targets compounds that release carbon disulfide (CS2) under the described analytical conditions (examples: mancozeb, maneb, propineb, thiram, zineb). It is applicable to fruits, many vegetables, cereals and other plant‑origin foodstuffs. The standard allows group quantification of these pesticide residues but does not provide identification of individual compounds.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Non‑fatty food matrices of plant origin including fruits, vegetables and cereals.
    • Analytical focus on residues that liberate CS2 under the method conditions.
  • Analytical principle
    • Spectrometric measurement of carbon disulfide as a marker for the whole group of dithiocarbamates and thiuram disulfides.
  • Group quantification
    • The method yields a total dithiocarbamate/thiuram disulfide residue value for the group; it does not differentiate or identify specific active ingredients.
  • Performance and validation
    • The standard defines performance characteristics and test conditions required for routine use (e.g., reproducibility, repeatability expectations and validation practices as typical for CEN test methods).
  • Reporting
    • Results are reported as total residue expressed according to the method’s calibration and units specified by the standard.

Applications

  • Routine monitoring of pesticide residues in produce and cereals.
  • Regulatory compliance testing to support food safety enforcement and market surveillance.
  • Quality control and incoming/raw material screening in food processing and distribution.
  • Reference method for inter‑laboratory comparisons, proficiency testing and method validation for labs adopting spectrometric approaches.

Who uses this standard

  • Accredited food‑testing laboratories performing pesticide residue analysis.
  • National and regional food safety authorities and control agencies.
  • Food producers, packers and quality assurance teams requiring residue screening.
  • Method developers and analysts validating alternative methods or performing comparative studies.

Related standards

  • Other parts of the EN 12396 series (where applicable) cover alternative methods or matrices; consult CEN listings for related EN 12396 parts and complementary chromatographic or confirmatory standards used for identification of specific compounds.
