This document specifies safety and performance requirements of domestic ceramic, glass ceramic cookware and glass lid for use on top of a cooking range or hob.
This document envisages that oven top applications for ceramic utensils involve all or specific parts of the cooking operation, for example, the browning of meat, where the remainder of the cooking can be completed in an oven or on top of the cooking range.
NOTE   Requirements for suitability for use with induction hobs are in the process of being compiled.

Dieses Dokument legt die Anforderungen an Sicherheit und Funktion von Haushaltskochgeschirren aus Keramik und Glaskeramik fest, die auf einem Herd oder Kochfeld verwendbar sind.
Dieses Dokument sieht vor, dass die Verwendung von Keramikgeschirr auf der Herdplatte den gesamten Garvorgang oder bestimmte Teile umfasst, z. B. das Anbraten von Fleisch, wobei der Garvorgang in einem Backofen oder auf dem Herd vollendet werden kann.
ANMERKUNG   Anforderungen an die Eignung für den Einsatz von Induktionskochfeldern werden derzeit erstellt.

EN 12983-2:2023+A1:2025 is a CEN (European) standard that sets safety and performance requirements for domestic ceramic and glass‑ceramic cookware and glass lids used on top of a cooking range or hob. It covers oven‑top applications (e.g., browning on the hob then finishing in an oven) and includes Amendment 1 (2025) which adds tests for glass‑lid impact and fragmentation.

• Scope: Applies to ceramic, glass‑ceramic (vitroceramic) cookware and glass lids intended for hob/top‑of‑range use.
• Impact resistance:
  • Rims and handles must withstand an impact energy > 0.05 J (per EN 12980).
  • Glass lids are subjected to a steel‑ball impact test (Annex B) and must show no visible damage.
• Thermal shock endurance (EN 1183):
  • Cookware body: Δt ≥ 180 °C.
  • Lid: Δt ≥ 150 °C.
• Hob suitability test (Annex A): a performance procedure simulating real use (e.g., heating with 10 ml oil, 500 g minced beef, followed by 60 min in 200 °C oven) to verify survival under hob/oven cycling.
• Non‑stick and easy‑clean surfaces: Claims must comply with EN 13834:2020 test requirements for non‑stick and easy‑clean coatings.
• Thermally toughened (tempered) glass lids: Fragmentation test (Annex C) requires at least 40 particles in a 50 mm square to demonstrate proper tempering; borosilicate lids are exempt from this fragmentation test.
• Product information & labelling:
  • Visible point‑of‑sale labelling: type, material, size, suitable heating sources (symbols allowed), manufacturer/importer.
  • Mandatory care, safety and use instructions (pre‑use preparation, cleaning, energy efficiency, deep‑frying warnings, contact details).

• Cookware manufacturers and designers: to design ceramic/glass products that meet European safety/performance criteria.
• Testing laboratories and compliance officers: to perform the specified impact, thermal shock, hob‑use and fragmentation tests (Annexes A–C).

• Product safety and quality managers: for risk assessments, CE/national compliance, and claims about hob compatibility, non‑stick or easy‑clean finishes.
