SIST EN 15796:2010 - Chemicals used for treatment of swimming pool water - Calcium hypochlorite - Effective Date
- 01-Jul-2022
Overview
SIST EN 15796:2022 is a European standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) that specifies the requirements and test methods for calcium hypochlorite used in the treatment of swimming pool water. This standard ensures the quality, purity, and safe handling of calcium hypochlorite products, either used directly or in formulations, improving water disinfection, oxidation, and overall pool hygiene.
Adopted by CEN members across EU and EFTA countries, SIST EN 15796:2022 updates and supersedes the previous EN 15796:2010, incorporating revised transportation, labelling, and safety requirements. The document is crucial for manufacturers, suppliers, and users to guarantee compliance with European safety and quality standards for swimming pool chemical treatment.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
SIST EN 15796:2022 applies to calcium hypochlorite for swimming pool water treatment, detailing its physical and chemical characteristics alongside purity criteria.Purity and Composition
The standard mandates a minimum active chlorine mass fraction of 65% in calcium hypochlorite products at delivery. It regulates limits on impurities such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead, and bromates, ensuring the chemical's safety and effectiveness.Test Methods
Sampling and testing methods conform with EN 900, ensuring consistent and reliable quality assessments of the calcium hypochlorite supplied.Labelling, Transportation, and Storage
The standard specifies proper labelling following EU hazard communication guidelines, including danger pictograms and hazard statements related to oxidizing properties and toxicity. It mandates transportation classification under UN numbers 1748 or 2880 depending on product form, with instructions for safe packaging and storage to prevent accidental decomposition or reaction.Safety and Handling
Annex B provides normative guidance for safe use, emphasizing never mixing calcium hypochlorite with organic chlorine compounds, clear first aid measures, and fire-fighting procedures recognizing that calcium hypochlorite supports combustion due to oxygen release during decomposition.Additional Information
Annex A supplies background on calcium hypochlorite’s raw materials, manufacturing, and application methods, such as its use as an oxidizer and disinfectant in metered doses dissolved in water.
Applications
Calcium hypochlorite, as specified in SIST EN 15796:2022, is primarily used for:
Swimming Pool Water Disinfection
Efficiently killing bacteria, viruses, and algae to maintain hygienic and safe swimming conditions.Oxidation of Contaminants
Removal of ammonium compounds, sulfides, and oxidation of iron from pool water, improving water clarity and safety.pH and Chemical Balance
Calcium hypochlorite causes slight pH increase and influences chloride levels, helping maintain optimal water conditions when properly dosed.Controlled Dosing
Typically applied in dissolving tanks with metering pumps, doses tailor to pool water composition to achieve minimal residual free chlorine sufficient for microbial control.Wastewater and Industrial Water Treatment (indirect)
While focused on swimming pool use, the standard's specifications can inform calcium hypochlorite use in broader water purification contexts requiring stringent purity.
Related Standards
EN 900:2021 – Covers calcium hypochlorite for water treatment for human consumption and provides essential test methods and purity requirements referenced by SIST EN 15796:2022.
EU CLP Regulation (EC No 1272/2008) – Regulates classification, labelling, and packaging of chemical substances, foundational for hazard communication detailed in this standard.
UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Provide the framework for safe transportation classifications referred in EN 15796 regarding calcium hypochlorite shipment.
ISO 14001 – Environmental management practices may complement calcium hypochlorite handling and storage for sustainable and compliant pool water treatment operations.
SIST EN 15796:2022 plays a critical role in ensuring that calcium hypochlorite used in swimming pool water treatment meets strict quality, safety, and regulatory requirements. Adoption helps reduce health risks, environmental impact, and enhances operational safety, making this standard essential for pool operators, chemical manufacturers, and regulatory authorities seeking reliable pool water disinfection solutions.
