oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 is the Slovene adoption of prEN IEC 63758-12:2026, published by SIST. It is part of Qi Specification - Version 2.3, Part 12: Active alignment system, and it specifies the active alignment power profile for PTx products that use active alignment. In practice, it tells designers and test teams how an APP-compliant PTx detects misalignment, realigns, and continues power transfer in the magnetic protocol.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 defines the requirements of the active alignment power profile. It applies to PTx products that use active alignment and are intended to use the magnetic protocol.
The document is organized into four main clauses:
- Clause 1 - General
- Clause 2 - Introduction
- Clause 3 - System Model
- Clause 4 - Requirements
Clause 1 covers the structure of the Qi Specification, scope, compliance language, references, and conventions for numbers, tolerances, data packets, text strings, and shorthand notation. Clause 3 explains the coil arrangement and alignment logic, while Clause 4 groups the technical requirements for active alignment, LQK, power delivery, communications, and foreign object detection.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026?
oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 requires the PTx to complete alignment quickly, hold the coil centrelines within a small offset, and follow the related Qi companion specifications for magnetic, power, communication, and foreign-object-detection behavior. The practical effect is that an APP-compliant PTx is not just a charger with magnets removed or replaced - it must still behave like a controlled Qi power source that can align, measure, communicate, and recover correctly.
Active alignment behavior
Clause 4.1 sets the core alignment outcomes. After active alignment is completed, the distance between the coil centres shall be 2 mm or less. The PTx shall finish active alignment within 5 seconds after mating, and also within 5 seconds after a misalignment event.
That matters because alignment speed and final coil spacing directly affect power transfer stability. A product that cannot realign fast enough may interrupt charging or fail the profile requirements.
Clause 4.1.4 says that when a misalignment event does not cause a loss of communications, the PTx shall complete active alignment in the cloak phase of the magnetic protocol, with cloak reason "generic." Clause 4.1.5 says that when a misalignment event causes a loss of communications, the PTx shall complete active alignment within 7 seconds.
That distinction matters in test and design work because the system must handle both normal movement and a more difficult recovery case. Engineers need to verify both the non-loss and loss-of-communications paths.
System model and misalignment detection
Clause 3 describes how the APP-compliant PTx is built and how alignment is tracked. The coil system model is the same as for MPP-compliant products, except that the magnet ring and permeable magnet shunt are not present, and the distance from the top surface of the coil to the interface surface is 2 mm to accommodate a moving coil mechanism.
Clause 3.2 defines the coordinate system used to describe coil position. The PTx surface provides the reference origin, and the PRx surface reference point marks the magnetic centre. Clause 3.3 says the PTx records the initial PRx coil coordinates when the PRx is mated, and keeps them for later comparison.
Clause 3.4 describes misalignment event detection. The PTx compares inverter-voltage change against a threshold to decide whether to enter cloak phase and re-measure the PRx position. If the change in coil position is greater than 2 mm, the PTx identifies a misalignment event and realigns while still in cloak phase.
In practice, this means the charger is using both electrical behavior and positional comparison to decide whether the load moved, rather than treating every power drop as a foreign object problem.
Alignment recovery paths
Clause 3.5 describes cloaked alignment. If the PTx identifies a misalignment event, it moves its coil to the detected PRx coordinates, restores alignment within the required LQK boundary, then exits cloak phase and returns to power transfer. Once realigned, the new PRx coordinates become the new initial reference for later checks.
Clause 3.6 covers renewed alignment. If the shift causes a communications loss and the coils cannot be realigned in cloak phase, the PTx returns to the initial alignment stage and treats the situation as a new mating instance.
That behavior matters for field reliability. It gives the device a defined recovery path after a large movement or a dropped communication link.
Requirements inherited from other Qi books
Clause 4 also requires compliance with several companion Qi Specification books:
- MPPMagneticsDesign for magnetic boundary requirements when aligned and misaligned
- MPPPowerDelivery for operating frequency, digital ping, K estimation, gain measurement, power transfer control, and mitigation of side effects at MPP frequency
- MPPCommunicationsPhysicalLayer for FSK and ASK requirements
- MPPForeignObjectDetection for mated Q-deflection test, MPP power loss accounting, and DPLOSS
- MPPCommunicationsProtocol for APP PTxIdentifier and the PTxXID datagram
For implementers, this means the active alignment system is only one part of the whole Qi behavior. The PTx still has to meet the underlying power, communication, and foreign-object-detection rules.
What terms does oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 define?
- ActiveAlignment - The process of aligning the centre of the PTx coil to the centre of the PRx coil.
- ActiveAlignmentPowerProfile - The power profile used by PTx products that use the magnetic protocol and active alignment.
- APP - The abbreviation used for ActiveAlignmentPowerProfile throughout the document.
- MisalignmentEvent - An event that causes the centre of the PRx coil to move away from the centre of the PTx coil.
- InitialAlignment - The first alignment state recorded when the PRx product is placed on the PTx product.
- Cloak phase - The phase used while the PTx distinguishes a misalignment event from a foreign object condition and performs recovery.
- Renewed alignment - The re-entry to initial alignment when communications are lost and realignment cannot be completed in cloak phase.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026?
oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 is used by teams developing Qi wireless power transmitters that support active alignment. It is also relevant for validation engineers, compliance laboratories, and quality teams that need to check alignment timing, coil spacing, communication behavior, and recovery after movement.
It matters most for products where the user experience depends on repeatable placement, such as flat-surface wireless charging systems. It is also useful for organizations that need APP-compliant PTx behavior to work with MPP-compliant PRx products.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026?
This document relies on companion Qi Specification books rather than standing alone:
- Glossary, Acronyms, and Symbols - provides shared terminology used across the Qi Specification.
- MPPMagneticsDesign - supplies the magnetic boundary requirements referenced for aligned and misaligned conditions.
- MPPPowerDelivery - supplies the power-delivery rules that APP-compliant PTx products must still meet.
- MPPCommunicationsPhysicalLayer - supplies the physical-layer requirements for FSK and ASK.
- MPPForeignObjectDetection - supplies the foreign-object-detection requirements used alongside active alignment.
- MPPCommunicationsProtocol - supplies the protocol rules and the PTxXID datagram reference.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 document contain?
The document contains a general section on structure, scope, compliance language, references, and notation rules for numbers and data packets. It also contains a system model with coil layout, coordinate system, initial alignment, misalignment detection, cloaked alignment, and renewed alignment.
The technical content is supported by figures and tables that show the coordinate system, coil assembly, and examples of data-packet field interpretation. Table 1 gives the verbal forms for requirements, Table 2 and Figure 1 illustrate data-packet fields, and Table 3 gives the assembly dimension used for the coil model.
Clause 4 groups the actual requirements by topic, including active alignment, LQK, power delivery, communications physical layer, foreign object detection, and communications protocol. For test and compliance work, that makes the document useful as both a system description and a checklist for what the PTx must do.
