prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 is a CLC committee draft for the Qi Specification, Version 2.3, Part 12: Active alignment system. It specifies the Active Alignment Power Profile (APP) for Qi products that use the magnetic protocol and active alignment. In practice, it tells transmitter-side product designers, compliance engineers, and test teams what an APP-compliant PTx product has to do for alignment, power transfer, communications, and foreign object detection.
What does prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 specify?
prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 defines the requirements of the active alignment power profile and allows use of the magnetic protocol for PTx products that use active alignment. The focus is on how a transmitter product detects alignment, corrects misalignment, and keeps operating within the Qi system model.
The document is organized into four main clauses:
- Clause 1 covers general rules, scope, compliance wording, references, and notation.
- Clause 2 introduces the terms used in the active alignment system.
- Clause 3 explains the system model, including coil design, coordinates, initial alignment, misalignment detection, cloaked alignment, and renewed alignment.
- Clause 4 gives the requirements for alignment behavior, LQK, power delivery, communications physical layer behavior, foreign object detection, and communications protocol identification.
Clause 1 also defines how numbers, tolerances, data packet fields, text strings, and shorthand packet references are written. That matters because the rest of the specification uses those conventions when defining data and behavior.
What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 63758-12:2026?
prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 is centered on a few practical requirements that shape product design and compliance testing. The most important points are the alignment target, the timing for alignment and realignment, and the need to remain compatible with the related Qi books for magnetics, power delivery, communications, and foreign object detection.
Alignment behavior and timing
- After active alignment is completed, the distance between the coil centers shall be 2 mm or less. This is the basic performance target: the transmitter has to bring the receiver coil into a close enough position for reliable power transfer.
- When a PRx product is mated to a PTx product, the PTx product shall execute and finish active alignment within 5 seconds. This sets the expected user-facing response time after placement.
- After a misalignment event, the PTx product shall execute and finish active alignment within 5 seconds. In practice, the system must recover quickly when the receiver moves.
- If a misalignment event does not cause loss of communications, the PTx product shall finish active alignment in the cloak phase of the magnetic protocol, with cloak reason “generic.” That means the design must support silent recovery without breaking the charging session.
- If a misalignment event causes loss of communications, the PTx product shall finish active alignment within 7 seconds. In that case, the system treats the situation as a renewed alignment and starts again from initial alignment.
System model and misalignment detection
Clause 3 describes the physical model behind APP-compliant PTx products. The system model is the same as for MPP-compliant products, except that the magnet ring and permeable magnet shunt are not present, and the distance from the top surface of the coil to the interface surface is 2 mm to accommodate a moving coil mechanism.
Clause 3.2 and 3.4 explain that the PTx product uses coordinates to track the PRx coil position. The transmitter stores the initial coordinates after mating, then compares later readings to detect movement. A change in inverter voltage above a threshold triggers cloak phase so the system can distinguish misalignment from foreign object effects. For implementers, this means alignment logic is tied to both electrical sensing and position tracking.
Compatibility with the rest of the Qi system
An APP-compliant PTx product shall comply with the LQK requirements detailed in MPPMagneticsDesign, specifically the magnetic boundary requirements for aligned and misaligned conditions. It also has to comply with the power delivery, communications physical layer, foreign object detection, and communications protocol requirements named in the related Qi books.
That matters because active alignment is not a stand-alone feature. A product has to work inside the wider Qi ecosystem and still meet the same power, signaling, and safety expectations as other compliant products.
Identification and protocol signaling
Clause 4.6.1 requires an APP-compliant PTx product to set the APP bit to ONE in the PTxXID data packet. This is the identification step that tells the rest of the system that the transmitter supports the active alignment profile. For interoperability, that bit is part of how receivers and other system elements know what behavior to expect.
What terms does prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 define?
- ActiveAlignment - The process of aligning the center of the PTx coil to the center of the PRx coil.
- ActiveAlignmentPowerProfile (APP) - The power profile used by PTx products that operate with the magnetic protocol and active alignment.
- MisalignmentEvent - An event that causes the center of the PRx coil to move out of alignment with the PTx coil.
- cloak phase - The phase of the magnetic protocol used while the transmitter distinguishes misalignment from other causes and, if possible, realigns without ending the session.
- renewed alignment - The recovery case used when communications are lost and the transmitter must treat the situation as a new mating instance.
- LQK - The magnetic boundary condition referenced by the APP requirements through MPPMagneticsDesign.
- PTxXID data packet - The packet used to identify the transmitter, including the APP bit required by this document.
Who uses prEN IEC 63758-12:2026?
prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 is used by companies and teams developing Qi wireless power transmitters with active alignment. That includes product designers, hardware engineers, firmware engineers, and test laboratories that need to verify coil positioning, alignment timing, and protocol signaling.
It is also relevant to quality managers, certification teams, and buyers who need to check whether a transmitter product is intended to support APP-compliant operation. The introduction places the work in the wider wireless power market, including flat-surface devices such as mobile phones and chargers, so the document is especially relevant to consumer electronics and accessory manufacturers.
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 63758-12:2026?
prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 is used together with these named Qi books and related references:
- Glossary, Acronyms, and Symbols - provides shared terminology used across the Qi specification set.
- MPPMagneticsDesign - supplies the LQK requirements and the magnetic boundary rules referenced by this part.
- MPPPowerDelivery - provides the power delivery requirements, including the PRx detection system mentioned in the system model.
- MPPCommunicationsPhysicalLayer - provides the physical-layer requirements for FSK and ASK behavior.
- MPPForeignObjectDetection - provides the foreign object detection requirements referenced for APP-compliant PTx products.
- MPPCommunicationsProtocol - provides the communications protocol rules, including the PTxXID data packet.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 - supplies the rules used here for verbal forms such as shall, should, may, and can.
What does the prEN IEC 63758-12:2026 document contain?
The document contains the general rules and notation for the Qi specification, then introduces the active alignment terminology and system model. It includes a simple coordinate-based model for coil alignment, plus figures showing initial alignment, misalignment detection, cloak phase behavior, and renewed alignment.
Clause 1 includes a table for verbal forms, a table and figure for data packet field interpretation, and examples of how numbers, text strings, and shorthand packet names are written. Clause 3 includes the coil assembly dimensions and several figures that illustrate the alignment process and the coordinate relationships.
Clause 4 is the technical core. It collects the active alignment requirements and links them to the related Qi books for magnetics, power delivery, communications physical layer behavior, foreign object detection, and transmitter identification.
