Abstract

This part of IEC 61212-3 gives requirements for industrial rigid round laminated moulded rods for electrical purposes, based on different resins and different reinforcements. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance.  However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone.

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 is the SIST adoption of EN 61212-3-3:2006, identical to IEC 61212-3-3:2006. It specifies requirements for industrial rigid round laminated moulded rods based on thermosetting resins for electrical purposes. The standard is meant for manufacturers, testers, specifiers, buyers, and users who need to identify a rod type and verify its properties for electrical, mechanical, or electronic use.

What does SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 specify?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 specifies individual material requirements for round laminated moulded rods used in electrical applications. It covers rods made from different resins and reinforcements, and it links each material type to its distinguishing properties and typical applications.

The document is organized into:

  • Scope
  • Normative references
  • Terms and definitions
  • Designations and abbreviations
  • Requirements

Annex ZA gives the normative references to the corresponding European publications. The scope also makes clear that the standard is about performance levels for the material type, while actual material selection still has to match the needs of the intended application.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 requires conformity to the general requirements in IEC 61212-1 and then adds material-specific limits in Tables 2, 3, and 4. In practice, that means a rod is not specified by name alone - its dimensions, finish, and property class must also fit the job.

Material classification and designation

Clause 4 classifies the rods by resin, reinforcement, method of manufacture, and distinguishing properties. The designation includes:

  • a two-letter resin code
  • a two-letter reinforcement code
  • a two-digit serial number
  • dimensions in millimetres
  • a finish letter for the external diameter

The standard uses finish codes for rods supplied in the as-produced condition or in ground or turned condition. This matters because a buyer or drawing needs the exact material form, not just the resin family.

Dimensional control

Tables 2a and 2b set permissible deviations from nominal diameter for rods in the as-moulded condition and for rods in ground or turned condition. Table 3 limits departure from straightness as a function of rod length.

In practice, these limits are what a quality inspector uses to accept or reject a batch, and they also tell a machinist how much material is available for finishing.

Property requirements

Table 4 gives the key property requirements by type, including:

  • flexural strength perpendicular to laminations
  • axial compressive strength
  • breakdown voltage at 90 °C in oil parallel to laminations
  • insulation resistance after immersion in water
  • thermal endurance
  • water absorption
  • density
  • flammability

The table also identifies the test method in IEC 61212-2 for each property. This is important because it ties the requirement to a specific test procedure, so different laboratories can check the same property in the same way.

Type selection information

Table 1 lists the rod types and their distinguishing characteristics, such as tracking resistance, mechanical strength, stability in humidity, elevated-temperature performance, and flame resistance. It also distinguishes the weave of the reinforcement where relevant.

That table is useful when choosing between resin-reinforcement combinations for service conditions, but the standard still expects the user to judge suitability against the actual application.

Notes on testing and interpretation

The flammability note explains that the small-scale laboratory test is mainly for monitoring production consistency. The table also shows that bracketed thermal endurance values are typical guidance, not requirements.

What terms does SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 define?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 defines or uses several key terms in a specific way:

  • Round laminated moulded rod - a rod made by rolling impregnated layers on a mandrel, curing them in a cylindrical mould under heat and pressure, then grinding to size.
  • Resin - the thermosetting base material used in the rod, identified in the designation by a two-letter code.
  • Reinforcement - the layered material used with the resin, such as woven cotton cloth or woven glass cloth.
  • Designation - the full coded description of the rod type, dimensions, and finish used for ordering and identification.
  • Finish - the condition of the outside diameter, either as produced or ground/turned.
  • Thermal endurance (TI) - the thermal endurance index used in Table 4 to classify resistance to heat ageing.

Who uses SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 is used by manufacturers of electrical insulating materials, test laboratories, equipment designers, quality managers, and buyers. It supports material selection, product designation, incoming inspection, type testing, and supplier qualification.

It is especially relevant in electrical, electronic, and mechanical applications where rigid laminated rods are machined or fitted into insulating parts. Users also rely on it when comparing grades for strength, electrical performance, humidity resistance, or flame resistance.

What changed in SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 supersedes EN 61212-3-3:1995. The stated changes are:

  • application use and safety statements were added
  • the document was reformatted to current IEC format
  • type EP GC 43 was added

Which standards are used with SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 relies on these referenced standards:

  • IEC 61212-1 - gives definitions, designations, and general requirements for the series.
  • IEC 61212-2:2006 - gives the test methods used for diameter, straightness, and the property tests in Table 4.
  • ISO 472 - provides the plastics vocabulary used for the term definitions.

Annex ZA maps these references to the corresponding European publications where applicable.

What does the SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 document contain?

SIST EN 61212-3-3:2007 contains the material classification, designation rules, and property tables needed to specify round laminated moulded rods. It includes the table of rod types and their characteristic uses, two diameter tolerance tables, a straightness limit, and a property table linked to IEC 61212-2 test methods.

The document also includes the terminology needed to define the rod form and the finish condition. For practical work, that makes it a specification for ordering, testing, and confirming conformity of laminated moulded rods rather than a general description of insulating materials.

FOREWORD 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any misinterpretation by any end user. 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication. 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication. 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employee
