Overview

SIST EN 12697-15:2022 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the test method for determining the segregation sensitivity of bituminous mixtures. This standard focuses on evaluating the mixing quality and the tendency of bituminous mixtures to segregate during handling and processing. It is primarily intended for hot bituminous mixtures and is applicable for mix-design processes and client information purposes.

Segregation in bituminous mixtures affects pavement homogeneity, which influences durability, effectiveness, and performance. By applying this test method, manufacturers and contractors can assess mixing efficiency and detect potential segregation issues early, enabling them to optimize production techniques and improve material consistency.

Key Topics

  • Scope
The standard is tailored for hot bituminous mixtures and provides a method to quantify segregation based on binder content and aggregate grading variations between different parts of a sample.

  • Test Principle
A conditioned sample of bituminous mixture is discharged from a conical hopper to form a stockpile. This stockpile is divided into finer and coarser parts by mechanical openings. The binder content and particle size distribution are analyzed for these parts.

  • Measurements & Calculations

    • Binder Segregation Value (SV_binder): Difference in bitumen content between fine and coarse parts.
    • Aggregate Segregation Value (SV_aggregate): Difference in sieve analysis results for coarse aggregates.
    • Mixing Quality (MQ) Value: Difference in binder content in the mastic subparts of fine and coarse fractions.
  • Apparatus and Sample Preparation
A specialized mechanical segregator with a temperature-controlled hopper is used. Test portions are prepared from laboratory or plant-produced samples with specific mass requirements.

  • Test Procedure
The bituminous mixture is heated to a reference temperature before testing. The hopper releases the material forming a stockpile divided via deadfalls. Samples from different parts are collected and analyzed for their composition.

  • Precision and Reporting
The standard provides guidelines on test repeatability and reproducibility, ensuring reliable and comparable results. Detailed reporting requirements include sample identification, temperatures, mass measurements, binder contents, and segregation values.

Applications

  • Quality Control in Asphalt Production
Monitoring segregation sensitivity helps ensure uniform material distribution, preventing premature pavement failures due to segregation-induced weak zones.

  • Mix Design Optimization
The test supports mix design by providing data on how varying aggregate and binder proportions affect segregation tendencies, allowing optimization for durability and performance.

  • Client and Regulatory Compliance
Provides standardized data for clients and stakeholders to verify material homogeneity, improving confidence in delivered asphalt products.

  • Research and Development
Helps researchers assess new bituminous materials or modified mixtures for segregation behavior to innovate more stable and effective pavement solutions.

Introduction
The homogeneity of the quality level of a bituminous pavement is among others determined by the
homogeneity of the composition of the bituminous mixtures applied. The homogeneity of a bituminous
mixture in the pavement is influenced by the mixing quality during production and by its segregation
sensitivity during handling. The latter is influenced by the mixture composition in terms of type and amount
of aggregate and binder. Some segregation is inherent to the nature of bituminous materials. Undue
segregation is caused by e.g. not appropriate mixing, improper loading of the hopper, lorry or finisher.
This test method provides useful information on the homogeneity quality of a bituminous mixture. The test
data provide information on the efficacy of the mixing procedure and on the sensitivity of the mixture for
segregation in its composition during the handling so that appropriate measures can be taken to minimize
such segregation where considered necessary.
