Overview
EN IEC 63171-1:2026 is an internationally recognized standard developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), focusing on connectors for electrical and electronic equipment. This standard provides a detailed specification for 2-way, shielded or unshielded, free and fixed connectors - known as Type 1 (copper LC style) - designed for balanced single-pair data transmission. EN IEC 63171-1:2026 defines mechanical mating information, pin assignments, and additional requirements for connectors supporting frequencies up to 600 MHz and current carrying capacity up to 2,0 A at 60 °C.
These Type 1 connectors are suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications, supporting high-speed data communication and power delivery using copper cabling in environments demanding reliability and interoperability.
Key Topics
- Connector Types: Covers 2-way, shielded or unshielded, free (cable-attached) and fixed (chassis or PCB-mounted) connectors, all in the copper LC style form factor.
- Application Scope: Intended for balanced single-pair data transmission systems operating at frequencies up to 600 MHz and carrying up to 2,0 A at 60 °C.
- Mechanical and Electrical Specifications: Details standard dimensions, pin assignments, and requirements ensuring compatibility, robustness, and electrical performance.
- Signal Integrity and Environmental Characteristics: Ensures connectors meet stringent requirements for insertion loss, return loss, insulation resistance, and environmental resilience aligned with generic cabling standards.
- Interoperability: Facilitates the interchange of connectors from different manufacturers, ensuring performance consistency and widespread usability.
- Testing and Reliability: Specifies test schedules, measurement methods, and preconditioning requirements to guarantee connector reliability across diverse environmental and operating conditions.
Applications
EN IEC 63171-1:2026 is highly relevant for manufacturers, designers, and installers involved in:
- Industrial Automation: Suitable for smart manufacturing environments demanding high-reliability single-pair Ethernet (SPE) transmissions.
- Building Automation and Control: Use in intelligent building systems requiring efficient, compact connectors for data and power distribution.
- Networking and Telecom Infrastructure: Applicable in network devices, patch panels, and cabling systems where balanced data transmission and compact connector design are crucial.
- Device-Level Connectivity: Integration in sensors, controllers, and field devices where robust and standardized copper interconnections streamline installation and maintenance.
By adhering to the connector interface, electrical characteristics, and testing outlined in EN IEC 63171-1:2026, stakeholders ensure compatibility with global cabling infrastructures, support for high-speed data transmission, and the foundation for future-proof network and automation deployments.
Related Standards
- IEC 63171: General requirements and tests for shielded/unshielded connectors for balanced single-pair data transmission.
- IEC 61754-20: Fibre optic connector interfaces - Type LC connector family (not intermateable with copper LC Type 1).

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
