Overview
SIST EN 61754-20:2012/A1:2022 is a European standard established by CLC and based on IEC 61754-20:2012/AMD1:2022. This amendment specifies interface standards for the type LC fibre optic connector family, a category widely recognized for its compact form factor and high performance in optical communication networks. The standard defines the geometry, dimensions, and intermateability requirements necessary to achieve reliable and efficient optical connections using LC-type connectors.
By detailing the technical interfaces of LC connectors, including simplex, duplex, and quad designs and their corresponding physical and active device interfaces, SIST EN 61754-20:2012/A1:2022 enables interoperability across multiple manufacturers and ensures consistent performance in fibre optic interconnections and passive component applications.
Key Topics
- LC Connector Family: Covers the full spectrum of LC connector types including simplex, duplex, quad, and associated adaptors and receptacle interfaces.
- Physical Contact (PC) and Angled Physical Contact (APC): The standard specifies both PC and APC (8°) ferrule endface styles to address different optical performance needs.
- Plastic Optical Fibre (POF) Interfaces: Includes standardized interfaces for connectors and adaptors using 1 mm and 1.25 mm plastic optical fibre.
- Intermateability Requirements: Tables provide clear guidance on the compatibility between various plug, receptacle, and adaptor interfaces, ensuring flexible system integration.
- Dimensional Standardization: The document establishes strict geometric and mechanical interface criteria to maintain reproducibility and reliability.
- Figure and Table References: Updated figures and tables illustrate duplex and quad plug/adaptor/receptacle interfaces for clarity and uniformity.
Applications
The SIST EN 61754-20:2012/A1:2022 standard is essential across a range of industries and environments utilizing fibre optic communication, particularly where LC connectors are preferred for their compact size and high-density capability:
- Telecommunications: Backbone, metro, and access networks make extensive use of LC connectors for optimized fibre management and performance.
- Data Centers: High-density patch panels and equipment in data centers rely on standardized LC connector interfaces for scalability and efficient cable routing.
- Enterprise Networks: Campus and building fibre networks deploy LC connectors for both horizontal and vertical structured cabling systems.
- Industrial and Medical Equipment: Ensures reliable optical connections in harsh or precision-driven environments using standardized LC interfaces.
- Active Device Integration: Specifies interfaces for connecting LC fibre optics directly to transceivers and other active network devices.
Related Standards
For comprehensive system compatibility and ongoing product development, consider these related standards:
- IEC 61754 Series: General requirements and dimensions for a variety of fibre optic connector families.
- IEC 61300 Series: Test and measurement procedures for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
- ISO/IEC 11801: International standard for generic cabling for customer premises, referencing connector requirements.
- EN 50173 Series: European equivalent for customer premises cabling, aligned with the use of LC connectors.
- IEC 61753 Series: Performance standards for fibre optic passive components.
By adhering to SIST EN 61754-20:2012/A1:2022, organizations achieve robust interoperability, streamlined maintenance, and the assurance of international best practices in deploying the type LC connector family in modern fibre optic networks.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they
