SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 is the Slovenian standard published by SIST for textile colour-fastness testing, based on ISO 105-P02:2002. It specifies a method for determining how the colour of textiles of all kinds and forms resists steam pleating, and it offers three test severities. Textile laboratories, manufacturers, and buyers use it to compare colour change and staining after pleating processes.
What does SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 specify?
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 specifies a test method for the colour fastness of textiles to steam pleating. The standard is for evaluating resistance to the pleating process, not for judging the quality of the pleating itself.
The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, principle, apparatus and materials, test specimen, procedure, and test report. It also includes two figures for the test setup and one table with the steaming conditions for the three test severities.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005?
Test purpose and severities
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 uses steam under pressure to check whether a textile keeps its colour and avoids staining nearby fabrics. Three severities are provided - mild, intermediate, and severe - so the user can select a level that matches the product or the specification being checked.
In practice, this means the standard supports routine screening as well as harsher qualification testing. The severe test is intended mainly for wholly synthetic textiles and is not to be used for textiles containing wool.
Specimen setup and adjacent fabrics
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 requires the specimen to be tested in contact with one or two adjacent fabrics. The standard allows either a multifibre adjacent fabric or two single-fibre adjacent fabrics; for blends, the adjacent fabrics should match the two predominant fibres.
This matters because the adjacent fabric shows staining that the specimen alone would not reveal. For yarn or loose fibre, the material is enclosed between fabric pieces before steaming, so the result reflects the behaviour of the colourant under pleating conditions.
Equipment and steaming method
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 specifies a specimen holder and a steaming arrangement that prevent water from splashing onto the specimen. A jacketed steamer may be used for all tests, while a domestic pressure cooker is limited to the mild and intermediate tests.
The severe test must use a jacketed steamer. This is important for laboratories because the choice of equipment affects the severity and repeatability of the result.
Drying, conditioning, and assessment
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 requires the steamed specimen to be opened out, dried in air, and then conditioned in the standard atmosphere for testing defined in ISO 139. After conditioning, the specimen and adjacent fabric are rated with the grey scales for change in colour and staining.
In practice, this gives a controlled way to score the result after the heat and moisture exposure. Specimens that liberate formaldehyde under steam-pleating conditions are to be tested separately.
Reporting
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 requires the report to identify the standard used, describe the sample, record the colour-change rating, report staining on the adjacent fabric(s), and state whether the mild, intermediate, or severe test was carried out.
That makes the result traceable and comparable across laboratories and suppliers.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 define?
- Colour fastness - The resistance of a textile colour to change or staining during a specified test.
- Steam pleating - A pleating process that uses steam under pressure.
- Adjacent fabric - A fabric placed next to the specimen so any staining can be detected and rated.
- Multifibre adjacent fabric - An adjacent fabric made to show staining on several fibre types at once.
- Grey scale - A reference scale used to assess change in colour and staining by comparison.
- Mild, intermediate, severe - The three steaming conditions provided for different levels of test severity.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005?
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 is used by textile testing laboratories, dyeing and finishing departments, quality control teams, and suppliers of fabrics, yarns, and loose fibres. It is also useful for buyers and specifiers who need to confirm that a material can withstand steam pleating without unacceptable colour change or staining.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 replaces SIST EN ISO 105-P02:1999. The underlying ISO text is identified as a third edition with a minor revision, replacing ISO 105-P02:1993. The European foreword also states that EN ISO 105-P02:2004 supersedes EN ISO 105-P02:1995 and was adopted without modification.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005?
- ISO 105-A01:1994 - Gives the general principles of colour-fastness testing and is also cited for adjacent-fabric handling.
- ISO 105-A02:1993 - Provides the grey scale for assessing change in colour.
- ISO 105-A03:1993 - Provides the grey scale for assessing staining.
- ISO 105-F:1985 - Specifies standard adjacent fabrics.
- ISO 105-F10:1989 - Specifies the multifibre adjacent fabric.
- ISO 139:1973 - Defines the standard atmospheres used for conditioning and testing.
What does the SIST EN ISO 105-P02:2005 document contain?
The document contains the test principle, equipment requirements, specimen preparation, and the steaming procedure for steam pleating. It also includes Figure 1 for the specimen holder and Figure 2 for the holder in the container, which help users assemble the test setup correctly.
Table 1 gives the steaming conditions for the three severities. Clause 7 sets out the reporting items, so the standard can be used for laboratory records, supplier approval, and comparative testing.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted
by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 105 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 105-P02 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 1, Tests for coloured
textiles and colorants.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 105-P02:1993), of which it constitutes a minor
revision.
ISO 105 was previously published in thirteen “parts”, each designated by a letter (e.g. “Part A”), with publication
dates between 1978 and 1985. Each part contained a series of “sections”, each designated by the respective part
letter and by a two-digit serial number (e.g. “Section A01”). These sections are now being republished as separate
documents, themselves designated “parts” but retaining their earlier alphanumeric designations. A complete list of
these parts is given in ISO 105-A01.

Colour fastness to pleating: Steam pleating
1 Scope
1.1 This part of ISO 105 specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds
and in all forms to the action of steam-pleating processes. The materials are not pleated during the test, and it is
emphasized that the test is not intended for assessing the quality of the pleating process.
1.2 Three tests differing in severity are provided; one or more of them may be used depending on the
requirements.
