This Harmonization Document specifies the test methods and requirements of tests for
a) fingerprinting (as defined in 3.12),
b) type testing (as defined in 3.13)
of solvent-free polymerizable, reacting resinous compound intended to be used for electrical insulation and mechanical protection in cable accessories covered by EN 50393, HD 629.1 S2 and HD 629.2 S2, for low and medium voltage up to 20,8/36 (42) kV. Fingerprinting and type testing of materials do not have a mandatory link to type testing of accessories. They shall be regarded as stand-alone tests, but can be carried out in combination with the accessory type tests.

Dieses Harmonisierungsdokument legt die Prüfverfahren und Anforderungen für  a)   die Fingerprintprüfung (entsprechend 3.12), b)   die Typprüfung (entsprechend 3.13) an lösemittelfreien aushärtbaren Reaktionsharzmassen, die als elektrische Isolierung oder mechanischer Schutz für Kabelgarnituren nach EN 50393, HD 629.1 S2 und HD 629.2 S2 fest, die für Nieder- und Mittelspannung bis 20,8/36 (42) kV eingesetzt werden. Fingerprint- und Typprüfungen an Materialien sind nicht zwingend mit Typprüfungen von Garnituren verbunden. Sie müssen als eigenständige Prüfung betrachtet werden, dürfen aber auch in Kombination mit Typprüfungen von Garnituren durchgeführt werden. ANMERKUNG   Informationen zu Gesundheit und Sicherheit enthält Anhang A.

Ce Document d’Harmonisation spécifie les méthodes et les exigences d’essai pour  a)   les essais d’identification (comme définis en 3.12), b)   les essais de type (comme définis en 3.13) des composés résineux polymérisables sans solvant destinés à être utilisés pour l’isolation électrique et la protection mécanique dans les accessoires de câbles couverts par l’EN 50393, le HD 629.1 S2 et le HD 629.2 S2, pour la basse et la moyenne tension jusqu’à 20,8/36 (42) kV. Il n’existe pas de lien obligatoire entre les essais d’identification et les essais de type des matériaux et les essais de type des accessoires. Ils doivent être considérés comme des essais indépendants mais ils peuvent être réalisés en combinaison avec les essais de type des accessoires. NOTE   Des informations sur la santé et la sécurité sont données en Annexe A.

This Harmonization Document was prepared by a task force under the direction of WG 11 of CENELEC
TC 20, Electric cables.
The text of the draft was submitted to the formal vote and was approved by CENELEC as HD 631.1 S2 on
2007-09-01.
This Harmonization Document supersedes HD 631.1 S1:1998.
The following dates were fixed:
– latest date by which the existence of the HD
has to be announced at national level (doa) 2008-03-01
– latest date by which the HD has to be implemented
at national level by publication of a harmonized
national standard or by endorsement (dop) 2008-09-01

1 Scope
This Harmonization Document specifies the test methods and requirements of tests for

a) fingerprinting (as defined in 3.12),
b) type testing (as defined in 3.13)

of solvent-free polymerizable, reacting resinous compound intended to be used for electrical insulation and
mechanical protection in cable accessories covered by EN 50393, HD 629.1 S2 and HD 629.2 S2, for low
and medium voltage up to 20,8/36 (42) kV.

Fingerprinting and type testing of materials do not have a mandatory link to type testing of accessories.
They shall be regarded as stand-alone tests, but can be carried out in combination with the accessory type
tests.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply together with those given in
IEC 60050-461.

resinous compound
compound for cable accessories made by the mixture of at least two components (resin and reagent)

NOTE For some applications additional components such as filler may be needed.

liquid organic material that cures as a result of polymerization by means of reagents (e.g. hardener or
accelerator) without releasing additional volatile products

reagent
substance or compound of substances which causes, when added to resin, hardening of resin by cross-
linking of molecules or accelerates hardening of resin

pot life
time available to mix the components of the resinous compound together and pour or inject the compound
into the cable accessory, such that it continues to flow smoothly and cohesively

“use before” date (shelf-life)
date until which a resinous compound, when stored under specified conditions of temperature and humidity,

4 Classification
Resinous compounds are classified according to their application in categories as follows:

A resinous compound is identified by a combination of categories.

For example: Low voltage compound for mechanical protection, curing at high temperature: LMP-HT;
 Low voltage compound for insulation, curing in presence of water: LI-W;
LMP/LI
 Low voltage compound for insulation & mechanical protection: .

Tests for fingerprinting and type testing are carried out in accordance with each of the resinous compound
categories.

5 Fingerprinting
5.1 General
Tests shall be carried out based on the category of the resinous compound as defined in Table 1.

5.2 Sampling
Samples for fingerprinting shall be taken from material stored under conditions prescribed by the supplier.
The fingerprinting test of resinous compound shall be carried out either:

a) as a stand-alone test. Samples used for the initial test shall be taken from material available as agreed
between supplier and user, or

b) in combination with an accessory type test. Samples used for the initial test shall be taken from the
same batch as those used in the accessory type test. In the event that no material from the same batch
is available, the samples used for the initial test shall be taken from material available as agreed
between supplier and user.

5.3 Preparation and conditioning
5.3.1 General
For all tests, unless otherwise specified, conditioning shall be carried out in accordance with EN ISO 291
using atmosphere 23/50.

5.3.2 Individual components prior to mixing
Components (resin and reagent) shall be individually prepared, conditioned and tested in accordance with
the relevant test method as specified in stage 1 of the sequence of tests given in Table 2. Filler, when
supplied as a separate item, shall not be tested as a component.
5.3.3 Resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage)
Compounds shall be prepared according to the supplier’s instructions, and then tested as specified in stage
2 of the sequence of tests given in Table 2.

5.3.4 Cured resinous compound (original)
Compounds shall be prepared according to supplier’s instructions and cured for 24 h at room temperature
unless otherwise specified in the test method. The specimens shall be post-cured at (80 ± 2) °C for 24 h
unless otherwise specified in the test method and then cooled in a desiccator for 24 h at room temperature.

NOTE  If degassing is needed, it will be indicated in the relevant test method and the conditions for the degassing will also be indicated.

Tests shall then be carried out as specified in stage 3 of the sequence of tests given in Table 2.

5.3.5 Cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry)
Compounds shall be prepared as per 5.3.4.

Tests shall then be carried out as specified in stage 4 of the sequence of tests given in Table 2.

5.4 Sequence of tests
Sequences of tests shall be carried out on the resinous compound in the following four stages, in
accordance with Table 2:
Stage 1: individual components prior to mixing;
Stage 2: resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage);
Stage 3: cured resinous compound (original);
Stage 4: cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry).

5.5 Test report
The test report shall include the following data:
1) resin category and identification;
2) batch number or identification;
3) marking and labelling according to material safety data sheet (MSDS);
4) test methods and results;
5) major test parameters, including conditioning and calibration, if any;
6) processing conditions to mix the compound;
7) copy of technical data sheet (TDS) and MSDS.

6 Type tests
6.1 General
Tests shall be carried out based on the category of the resinous compound as defined in Table 1. These
tests are of such a nature that, once successfully completed, they need not be repeated unless changes are
made in the material, component formulation or manufacturing process, which might change the

performance characteristics.

6.2 Sampling
Samples for type testing shall be taken from material stored under conditions prescribed by the supplier.
The type testing of resinous compound shall be carried out either:

a) as a stand-alone test. Samples used for the type test shall be taken from material available as agreed
between supplier and user, or

b) in combination with an accessory type test. Samples used for the resinous compound type test shall be
taken from the same batch as used in the accessory type test. In the event that no material from the
same batch is available, the samples used for the resinous compound type test shall be taken from
material available as agreed between supplier and user.

6.3 Preparation and conditioning
6.3.1 General
For all tests, unless otherwise specified, conditioning shall be made in accordance with EN ISO 291 using
atmosphere 23/50.

6.3.2 Individual components prior to mixing
Components (resin and reagent) shall be individually prepared, conditioned and tested in accordance with
the relevant test method as specified in stage 1 of the sequence of tests given in Table 3. Filler, when
supplied as a separate item, shall not be tested as a component.

6.3.3 Resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage)
Compounds shall be prepared and mixed according to supplier’s instructions and tested as specified in
stage 2 of the sequence of tests specified in Table 3.

6.3.4 Cured resinous compound (original)
Compounds shall be prepared according to supplier’s instructions and cured for 24 h at room temperature
unless otherwise specified in the test method. The specimens shall be post-cured at (80 ± 2) °C for 24 h
unless otherwise specified in the test method, and then cooled in a desiccator for 24 h at room temperature.

NOTE If degassing is needed, it will be indicated in the relevant test method and the conditions for the degassing will also be indicated.

6.3.5 Cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry and wet)
Compounds shall be prepared according to supplier’s instructions and cured for 24 h at room temperature
unless otherwise specified in the test method. The specimens shall be post-cured at (80 ± 2) °C for 24 h
unless otherwise specified in the test method, and then cooled in a desiccator for 24 h at room temperature.

6.4 Tests
Tests shall be carried out on the resinous compound in the following four stages, in accordance with
Table 3:

Stage 1: individual components prior to mixing;
Stage 2: resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage);
Stage 3: cured resinous compound (original);
Stage 4: cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry and wet).

6.5 Test report
The test report shall include the following data:
1) resin category and identification;
2) batch number or identification;
3) marking and labelling according to the MSDS;
4) test results;
5) major test parameters, including conditioning and calibration, if any;
6) processing conditions used to mix the compound;
7) copy of TDS and MSDS.

7 Test methods
7.1 General
International test methods are specified within this standard where available; for those tests where there is
no international test method available or the test method needs some adaptation of conditions, the method
or specific conditions are specified in 7.2 to 7.6.

NOTE See Tables 2 and 3 regarding use of these test methods.

7.2 Pot life
7.2.1 Apparatus and materials

7.2.1.1 Glass rod, diameter nominal 8 mm, length nominal 250 mm.
7.2.1.2 Beaker in accordance with ISO 7056, polyethylene, polypropylene or glass with dimensions:
(70 to 100) mm diameter and (70 to 130) mm high.
7.2.1.4 Thermal insulation made of expanded polystyrene (at least 30 mm thick) fitting to the beaker
shape.
7.2.1.5 Forced air oven with temperature control.
7.2.1.6 Stopwatch.

7.2.2 Preparation of the sample
The beaker shall be marked to a volume of (300 ± 25) ml.

The beaker, glass rod and a sufficient amount of resinous compound components to prepare 400 ml to
700 ml of compound shall be stored in an oven or a controlled temperature room for 24 h at the temperature

specified in Table 2 or 3 with a tolerance of K.

The components shall be removed from the oven if relevant, the stopwatch started and the components
mixed immediately according to the supplier’s instructions.

The beaker shall be removed from the oven if relevant, and the mixed compound poured into the beaker up
to the mark previously made. The beaker shall then be placed in the thermal insulation and the test carried
out.

7.2.3 Procedure

The test shall be performed at an ambient temperature of (23 1) °C. The glass rod shall be inserted
vertically, in the centre of the mixture in the beaker, to a depth of half the mixture and immediately shall be
withdrawn vertically to 200 mm above the beaker.

The insertion of the glass rod shall be repeated at regular intervals until the compound only drips or can no
longer be lifted with the glass rod. At this point, the stopwatch shall be stopped and the time recorded. The
pot life shall be rounded to the nearest minute.

Foreword

This draft Harmonization Document was prepared by a task force under the direction of WG 11 of
CENELEC TC 20, Electric cables. As agreed at the Setubal meeting (June 2004) it is submitted to
CENELEC enquiry.

When published it will supersede HD 631.1 S1:1998.

HD 631 is planned to have 4 parts:

Part 1: Fingerprinting and type tests for resinous compounds

Part 2: Fingerprinting and type tests for heat shrinkable components for low voltage applications

Part 3: Fingerprinting for heat shrinkable components for medium voltage applications from 3,6/6 (7,2) kV
up to 20,8/36 (42) kV

Part 4: Fingerprinting for cold shrinkable components for low and medium voltage applications up to
20,8/36 (42) kV

1 Scope
This Harmonization Document specifies the conditions and sequences of tests for

a) fingerprinting (as defined in 3.12),
b) type testing (as defined in 3.13)

of the solvent free polymerizable, reacting resinous compound intended to be used for electrical insulation
and mechanical protection in cable accessories covered by EN 50393, HD 629.1 S2 and HD 629.2 S2, for
low and medium voltage up to 20,8/36 (42) kV.

Fingerprinting and type testing of materials do not have a mandatory link to type testing of accessories.
They shall be regarded as stand-alone tests, but can be used in combination with the accessory type tests.

NOTE This standard is based on existing European practices and experience.

3 Terms and definitions

compound for cable accessories made by the mixture of at least two components (resin and reagent)

NOTE For some applications additional components such as filler may be needed.

4 General requirements
4.1 Classification

Resinous compounds are classified according to their application in categories as follows:

A resinous compound is identified by a combination of categories.

For example: Low voltage resinous compound for mechanical protection: LMP;
 Low voltage resinous compound for insulation, curing in presence of water: LIW;
 Low voltage resinous compound for insulation & mechanical protection: LMP/LI.

Tests for fingerprinting and type testing are carried out in accordance with each of the resinous compound
categories.

4.2 Packaging

Packaging shall be sufficient to ensure that any stated shelf life of the resinous compound components is
maintained when stored under specified conditions of temperature and humidity.

4.3 Marking and labelling
4.3.1 General

The following information, in the relevant national language(s), shall be printed or labelled on the resinous
compound components packaging and on the accessory kit.

4.3.2 Resinous compound components
Each individual part of the resinous compound, or the resinous compound component if packed separately
shall be printed or labelled on its packaging with:
1) supplier’s name or logo;
2) part number or identification;
3) lot number or production date;
4) specified storage conditions, if any;
5) “Use before date” (shelf-life);
6) health and safety marking according to relevant EU or national legislation (see also Annex A);
7) mixing and application instructions;
8) disposal instruction;
9) resinous compound categories.

4.3.3 Accessory kit

Each accessory kit containing a resinous compound shall be printed or labelled on its packaging and shall
at least indicate:
1) the specified storage conditions, if any;
2) the “Use before date” (shelf life);
3) the health and safety marking according to relevant EU or national legislation.

5 Resinous compound fingerprinting
5.1 General
Tests shall be carried out based on the category of the resinous compound as defined in Table 1.

5.2 Sampling
If fingerprinting of resinous compound is carried out as a stand-alone test, then the samples used for the
initial test shall be taken from material available as agreed between manufacturer and user.

If fingerprinting of resinous compound is carried out in combination with a accessory type test, then the
samples used for the initial test shall be taken from the same batch as those used in the accessory type
test. In the event that no material from the same batch is available, then the samples used for the initial
test shall be taken from material available as agreed between manufacturer and user.

5.3 Sequence of tests

Sequences of tests shall be carried out on the resinous compound in the following four stages, in
accordance with Table 2:
Stage 1: individual components prior to mixing;
Stage 2: resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage);
Stage 3: cured resinous compound (original);
Stage 4: cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry).

5.4 Preparation and conditioning
5.4.1 General
For all tests, unless otherwise specified, conditioning shall be carried out in accordance with EN ISO 291 using
atmosphere 23/50.

5.4.2 Resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage)

Compounds shall be prepared according to the supplier’s instructions, and then tested as specified in stage 1 of the
sequence of tests given in Table 2.

5.4.3 Cured resinous compound (original)

Compounds shall be prepared according to supplier’s instructions and cured for 24 h at room temperature unless
otherwise specified in the test method. The specimens shall be post-cured at (80 ± 2) °C for 24 h unless otherwise
specified in the test method [for example for weight loss: no curing at (80 ± 2) °C is required before weighing the
sample] and then cooled in a desiccator for 24 h at room temperature.

NOTE If degassing is needed, it will be indicated in the relevant test method and the conditions for the degassing will also be
indicated.

Tests shall then be carried out as specified in stage 2 of the sequence of tests given in Table 2.

5.4.4 Cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry)

Compounds shall be prepared as per 5.4.3.

Tests shall then be carried out as specified in stage 3 of the sequence of tests given in Table 2.

5.5 Test report

The test report shall include the following data:
1) resin category and identification;
2) lot number or identification;
3) conformity of marking and labelling to MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet);
4) test results;
5) major test parameters, including conditioning and calibration, if any;
6) processing conditions to mix the compound;
7) copy of technical data sheet and MSDS.

6 Resinous compound type tests
6.1 General
Tests shall be carried out based on the category of the resinous compound as defined in Table 1. These tests are of
such a nature that, once successfully completed, they need not to be repeated unless changes are made in
the material, component formulation or manufacturing process, which might change the performance
characteristics.

6.2 Sampling
If a type test of resinous compound is carried out as a stand-alone test, then the samples used shall be
taken from material available as agreed between manufacturer and user.

If a type test of resinous compound is carried out in combination with an accessory type test, then the
samples used shall be from the same batch as those used in the accessory type test. In the event that no
material from the same batch is available, then the samples used shall be taken from material available as
agreed between manufacturer and user.

6.3 Sequence of tests

Tests shall be carried out on the resinous compound in the following four stages, in accordance with
Table 3:

Stage 1: Individual components prior to mixing;
Stage 2: Resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage);
Stage 3: Cured resinous compound (original);
Stage 4: Cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry and wet).

6.4 Preparation and conditioning
6.4.1 General

For all tests, unless otherwise specified, conditioning shall be made in accordance with EN ISO 291 using atmosphere
23/50.

6.4.2 Individual components prior to mixing
Components (resin and reagent) shall be individually prepared, conditioned and tested in accordance with the relevant
test method as specified in stage 1 of the sequence of tests given in Table 3. Filler, when supplied as a separate item,
shall not be tested as a component.

6.4.3 Resinous compound just after mixing (curing stage)
Compounds shall be prepared and mixed according to supplier’s instructions and tested as specified in stage 2 of the
sequence of tests specified in Table 3.

6.4.4 Cured resinous compound (original)

Compounds shall be prepared according to supplier’s instructions and cured for 24 h at room temperature unless
otherwise specified in the test method. The specimens shall be post-cured at (80 ± 2) °C for 24 h unless otherwise
specified in the test method, and then cooled in a desiccator for 24 h at room temperature.

NOTE If degassing is needed, it will be indicated in the relevant test method and the conditions for the degassing will also be
indicated.

Conditioning shall be made in accordance with EN ISO 291 using atmosphere 23/50. Tests shall then be made in
accordance with stage 3 of the sequence of tests specified in Table 3.

6.4.5 Cured resinous compound after thermal ageing (dry and wet)

Compounds shall be prepared according to supplier’s instructions and cured for 24 h at room temperature unless
otherwise specified in the test method. The specimens shall be post-cured at (80 ± 2) °C for 24 h unless otherwise
specified in the test method, and then cooled in a desiccator for 24 h at room temperature.

NOTE If degassing is needed, it will be indicated in the relevant test method and the conditions for the degassing will also be
indicated.

Conditioning shall be made in accordance with EN ISO 291 using atmosphere 23/50. Tests shall then be made in
accordance with stage 4 of the sequence of tests specified in Table 3.

6.5 Test report
The test report shall include the following data:
1) resin category and identification;
2) lot number or identification;
3) conformity of marking and labeling to MSDS;
4) test results;
5) major test parameters, including conditioning and calibration, if any;
6) processing conditions used to mix the compound;
7) copy of technical data sheet and MSDS.

7 Test methods
7.1 General
International test methods are specified within this standard where available; for those tests where there is
no international test method available or the test method needs some adaptation of conditions, the method
or specific conditions are specified in 7.2 to 7.7.

NOTE See Tables 2 and 3 regarding use of these test methods.

7.2 Gel time
7.2.1 General
Any specific gel time test method and related equipment may be used to determine the gel time.
When the resinous compound has to be retested the same method and type of equipment shall be used.

7.2.2 Preparation of the sample

Conditioning of samples shall be made with a temperature of (23 ± 1) °C

7.2.3 Test report

The gel time shall be reported, rounded to the nearest minute.

The test method, calibration details and the equipment type and model shall be reported.

7.3 Pot life
7.3.1 Apparatus and materials

7.3.1.1 Glass rod, diameter nominal 8 mm, length nominal 250 mm.
7.3.1.2 Beaker in accordance with ISO 7056, Polyethylene, Polypropylene or glass with dimensions:
(70 to 100) mm diameter and (70 to 130) mm high.
7.3.1.4 Thermal insulation made of expanded polystyrene (at least 30 mm thick) fitting to the beaker
shape.
7.3.1.5 Forced air oven with temperature control.
7.3.1.6 Stopwatch.

7.3.2 Preparation of the sample
The beaker shall be marked to a volume of (300 ± 25) ml.

The beaker, glass rod and a sufficient amount of resinous compound components to prepare 400 ml to
700 ml of compound shall be stored in an oven or a control temperature room for 24 h at the temperature

specified in Table 3 with a tolerance of K.

The components shall be removed from the oven if relevant, the stopwatch started and the components
mixed immediately according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

The beaker shall be removed from the oven if relevant, and the mixed compound poured into the beaker up
to the mark previously made. The beaker shall then be placed in the sheathing and the test carried out.
