Door leaves - Determination of the behaviour under humidity variations in successive uniform climates
This European Standard describes the method which is to be used to test the behaviour under humidity variations of door leaves placed in successive uniform climates. This standard can be applied to all door leaves(e.g.solid, hollow core, panelled and glazed doors ), which are nominally flat and rigid, and which contain hygroscopic materials which might influence their behaviour during this test.

Overview
SIST EN 1294:2001 sets out the standard method for testing how door leaves respond to humidity variations in a sequence of uniform climatic conditions. Developed by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this European standard is applicable to all nominally flat and rigid door leaves constructed with hygroscopic materials. These may include solid, hollow core, panelled, and glazed doors commonly used in building interiors and exteriors. The standard aims to ensure that manufacturers and specifiers can reliably assess door durability and performance when exposed to environmental humidity fluctuations.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Applies to various types of door leaves, including solid, panelled, hollow core, and glazed doors, provided they are generally flat and rigid.
- Humidity Variation Testing: Describes a standardized testing procedure to determine the behavior of doors subjected to changes in humidity under controlled, sequential climates.
- Evaluation Criteria: Focuses primarily on door leaves containing hygroscopic materials, which are sensitive to moisture and can affect dimensional stability and structural integrity.
- Uniform Climate Conditions: Specifies that testing is conducted in successive, consistent climatic environments on both sides of the door leaf, allowing for reproducible and comparable results.
Applications
The practical benefits of applying SIST EN 1294:2001 in construction, manufacturing, and quality assurance include:
- Product Development: Manufacturers can use this standard to evaluate and improve the moisture resistance and stability of new door designs and materials.
- Quality Assurance: Assures architects, builders, and specifiers that door leaves will maintain integrity and function when installed in environments subject to varying humidity.
- Compliance and Certification: Helps demonstrate conformity with European regulations and building codes for doors and windows by documenting performance under standardized test conditions.
- Maintenance Planning: Informs property managers and facilities teams about potential door performance issues in areas with fluctuating humidity, enabling better maintenance and replacement schedules.
Related Standards
Users of SIST EN 1294:2001 may also benefit from consulting related international and European standards, particularly for holistic doors and windows testing and specification:

- EN 1191: Windows and doors - Resistance to repeated opening and closing
- EN 947: Doors - Measurement of dimensions and defects of door leaves
- EN 12519: Terminology and definitions for windows and doors
- ISO 717-1: Acoustic performance of doors and windows
By referencing SIST EN 1294:2001 alongside these related standards, manufacturers, specifiers, and regulatory bodies can ensure comprehensive assessment and compliance for door leaves in diverse built environments.
