Hardmetals - Determination of transverse rupture strength (ISO 3327:2009)
ISO 3327:2009 specifies a method for the determination of the transverse rupture strength of hardmetals.
This method is applicable to hardmetals of negligible ductility. If it is used for hardmetals showing significant plastic deformation before breaking, incorrect results may be obtained. In such cases, the method may be used for comparison purposes only.

Overview
SIST EN ISO 3327:2009 is an international standard developed by ISO/TC 119 and adopted by CEN that specifies the method for determining the transverse rupture strength of hardmetals. This testing standard is essential for assessing the mechanical strength of hardmetals, materials known for their hardness and brittleness, making them widely used in cutting tools, wear-resistant parts, and industrial applications.
The standard applies primarily to hardmetals with negligible ductility, ensuring accuracy in measurements. For hardmetals exhibiting significant plastic deformation before fracture, this method may yield inaccurate results and should be applied only for comparative purposes.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
This method targets hardmetals that break without noticeable plastic deformation. It defines how to measure transverse rupture strength under short-term static loading conditions.Test Specimens
Specifies three types of test pieces:- Type A & B: Rectangular cross-section test pieces, with detailed dimensions and surface finish requirements.
- Type C: Cylindrical test pieces, suitable for specific testing scenarios.
Surface Preparation
Test pieces must be ground or prepared with a specific surface roughness (maximum Rₐ of 0.4 µm) and chamfered edges to ensure consistent and reliable results.Test Setup and Apparatus
The standard requires a force application device capable of controlled load increments with an accuracy of at least 1%. Three precision tungsten carbide rollers (or a ball for flat specimens) are used to support and load the test pieces. Exact distances between supports and precise alignment criteria ensure repeatability and reliability.Test Procedure
The load is applied gradually at the midpoint of the specimen until rupture occurs, with defined maximum loading rates to avoid dynamic effects on results.Calculation of Transverse Rupture Strength
Formulas are provided for both rectangular and cylindrical specimens to compute rupture strength in N/mm², including correction factors for chamfer dimensions.Reporting Requirements
Test reports must clearly reference the standard, sample identification, specimen type, surface preparation, load application method, and results. Subscripts indicate specimen type and surface condition (sintered or ground).
Applications
Material Quality Control
Crucial for manufacturers of hardmetals to ensure their products meet mechanical strength requirements before distribution.Research and Development
Enables comparative analysis of hardmetal formulations and processing techniques to enhance durability and performance.Component Design Verification
Engineers use transverse rupture strength data to validate component design safety and expected lifespan in demanding industrial environments like tooling and wear parts.Failure Analysis
Assists in identifying causes of premature fracture in hardmetal components through standardized strength measurement.
Related Standards
- EN 23327:1993 – This was the predecessor to SIST EN ISO 3327:2009, now superseded by the updated method.
- Other ISO standards under ISO/TC 119 cover powder metallurgy sampling and testing to complement mechanical property measurement of hardmetals.
- Standards addressing surface preparation and hardness testing for hardmetals provide comprehensive quality assessment frameworks.
By adhering to the SIST EN ISO 3327:2009 standard, professionals working with hardmetals can reliably measure transverse rupture strength, a critical factor influencing the performance and safety of precision tools and wear-resistant parts. This test method facilitates consistent, comparable data across laboratories and industries, enhancing material selection and quality assurance processes.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 3327 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 119, Powder metallurgy, Subcommittee SC 4,
Sampling and testing methods for hardmetals.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 3327:1982), which has been technically
revised.
