Overview
SIST EN 695:2005 is a European standard specifying the connecting dimensions for kitchen sinks intended for domestic use. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard ensures compatibility and interchangeability for kitchen sinks, regardless of the materials used in their manufacture. The standard covers sinks installed in private homes, as well as those in hotels, student accommodation, hospitals, and similar buildings, unless specialized medical installations are required. Notably, SIST EN 695:2005 does not apply to industrial kitchen sinks.
By harmonizing connecting dimensions, this standard helps manufacturers, installers, and building designers achieve efficient installation, maintenance, and replacement of kitchen sinks across various settings.
Key Topics
SIST EN 695:2005 addresses several critical aspects of kitchen sink installation:
- Waste Outlet Holes: Specifies the sizes and clearances necessary for waste outlet holes, accommodating different materials such as stainless steel, ceramics, enamelled steel, and plastics.
- Fitting Areas for Tap Holes: Defines the dimensions for fitting single tap holes and two-hole mixer taps, ensuring adequate space for tap installation and accessibility for maintenance.
- Overflow Holes: Outlines the requirements for overflow hole positioning, shapes (rectangular and round), and clearances to facilitate effective overflow management and avoid flooding.
- Compatibility: Ensures connecting dimensions are standardized for all domestic kitchen sinks, making it easier to source compatible fittings and accessories.
- Design Versatility: While providing standard dimensions, the document allows for design flexibility, stating that other figures and configurations are possible as long as the dimensional requirements are met.
Applications
Implementing SIST EN 695:2005 provides practical value across the supply chain:
- Manufacturers: Can produce kitchen sinks to standardized dimensions, ensuring their products are compatible with commonly available fittings and fixtures in the European market.
- Plumbers and Installers: Benefit from predictable, uniform connection points, reducing time and error during installation and minimizing the risk of leaks or other complications.
- Architects and Building Designers: Gain the flexibility to specify kitchen sinks in diverse environments, confident that standardized connecting dimensions will meet common plumbing requirements.
- Facility Managers: In hotels, hospitals, or residential complexes, standardized sinks simplify maintenance and part replacement, supporting efficient operations and cost control.
- Homeowners: Enjoy greater flexibility and assurance when replacing or upgrading kitchen sinks, as standardized dimensions facilitate finding compatible units and parts.
Related Standards
For comprehensive kitchen sink specification and installation, the following related standards are referenced within SIST EN 695:2005:
- EN 13310:Kitchen sinks - Functional requirements and test methods. This standard sets out the performance and testing criteria for kitchen sinks, supporting durability and usability.
- EN 274-1:Waste fittings for sanitary appliances - Part 1: Requirements. Details requirements for waste fittings, ensuring reliable water and waste management in sanitary installations.
Together with SIST EN 695:2005, these standards help harmonize kitchen sink products and installations across Europe, supporting quality assurance and consistency in domestic sanitary fixtures.
