Overview - EN 60335-2-98:2003/A11:2019 (humidifiers)
EN 60335-2-98:2003/A11:2019 is a CENELEC amendment to the household electrical appliance safety standard that adds particular requirements for humidifiers. It is to be read with EN 60335-1:2012 (Part 1) and supports conformity with the Low Voltage Directive (Directive 2014/35/EU). Amendment A11 (approved April 2019) clarifies scope, adds definitions for humidifier types, and introduces new marking, instruction and construction requirements to address hygiene and burn risks specific to humidifiers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & definitions: Explicitly covers ultrasonic, impeller, evaporation and steam‑vaporizer humidifiers and clarifies foreseeable user scenarios (not covering unsupervised very young children).
- Marking & instructions:
- Appliances that are ultrasonic or impeller type must be marked with the symbol/text "Clean the water tank every 3 days" (symbol IEC 60417‑5575) and must explain symbols in the instructions.
- Instruction content must address filling, cleaning, descaling, and warn about biological growth and avoiding damp surroundings.
- Specific warnings for ultrasonic/impeller devices about microorganism risks and guidance to empty and clean tanks every 3 days (or use manufacturer‑specified antibacterial additives).
- Steam vaporizer instructions must warn about scald/burn hazards and keeping the appliance away from children.
- Construction & hygiene:
- Water reservoirs (ultrasonic/impeller without antibacterial features) must allow access to all internal water‑contact surfaces for cleaning (inspection with test probe B: access within 3 mm of corners).
- Devices without antibacterial features must provide an audible and visible indicator after a maximum of 3 days since last refill; indication must persist until user action.
- If antibacterial features are claimed, the manufacturer must supply documented evidence of effectiveness.
- Appliances must be constructed to prevent lubricant contamination of reservoir water.
- Compliance checks: Inspection, documentation review and specified test probes are used to verify conformity.
Practical applications & who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and product designers of household humidifiers use the standard to design safe, compliant products.
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies apply the construction, marking and instruction clauses during compliance testing.
- Compliance engineers and regulatory teams rely on the standard to demonstrate conformity with the Low Voltage Directive and national implementation.
- Retailers and procurement can reference the standard when specifying safe humidifiers for consumer markets.
