SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 is a CENELEC European Standard for the safety of electric ondol-mattresses with a non-flexible heated part. It applies to household and similar appliances up to 250 V, including direct current (DC) supplied and battery-operated appliances, and also covers control units supplied with the appliance. In practice, it is the product-family safety standard manufacturers, test laboratories, and compliance teams use to check design, marking, instructions, insulation, heating performance, and abnormal-operation protection.

What does SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 specifies particular safety requirements for electric ondol-mattresses for household and similar use. It supplements the general safety rules of Part 1 for this specific product type, so readers should use it as the appliance-specific layer of requirements.

The scope includes appliances intended for household and similar purposes, including products used where the public may be exposed, such as community spas or cold ambient locations. It excludes industrial-only appliances and several other heating product families, including flexible blankets and pads, room heaters, water-bed heaters, animal heating appliances, foot warmers and heating mats, flexible sheet heating elements for room heating, heated carpets under removable floor coverings, and appliances intended for medical supervision.

The document is organized into Clauses 1 to 32, plus two normative annexes and two figures. The annexes each cover a different topic:

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex BBattery-operated appliances, separable batteries, and detachable batteries for battery-operated appliances
Annex AASpecification for thermal insulation

Figures 101 and 102 show the test arrangements used for leakage current, electric strength, and thermal insulation positioning.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 focuses on hazards that matter most for heated bedding-type appliances: overheating, electric shock, moisture, mechanical damage, and unsafe controls. The most important requirements are spread across the marking, heating, leakage current, moisture, abnormal operation, construction, and component clauses.

  • Marking and instructions (Clause 7) - Appliances shall carry the rated power input, a read-the-instructions warning, and a warning against use with a helpless person, an infant, or a person insensitive to heat. If the appliance uses a detachable control unit or transformer, the matching reference has to be identified. In practice, this helps prevent unsafe pairing and misuse.

  • Access to live parts (Clause 8) - The standard adds test probe 19 wherever test probe 18 is used. That means the enclosure and accessible openings are checked with an additional probe condition, which matters for exposed controls and connectors.

  • Heating and surface temperature (Clause 11) - The ondol-mattress is tested with the separate control unit placed away from the appliance, and temperatures are measured using copper or brass plates at several locations. The surface temperature limit is 56 °C, and another test checks that the appliance can be operated without risk of heatstroke, with a 37 °C limit at the specified measurement point. This is central for user safety because it controls burn and overheating risk during normal use.

  • Leakage current and electric strength (Clauses 13 and 16) - The tests use a metal foil arrangement over the heated area with a uniformly distributed load and the thermal insulation sheet in place. The leakage current limits are specified for the heating part, and the dielectric test is applied between live parts and the foil. In practice, this checks that the heated structure still provides acceptable insulation in a realistic loaded condition.

  • Moisture resistance (Clause 15) - A defined spillage test is applied, followed by electric strength testing and inspection for water on insulation. This matters because bed-like heating products can be exposed to liquids in everyday use.

  • Abnormal operation and component failure (Clause 19) - The standard replaces the Part 1 abnormal-operation tests with tests that cover partial thermal insulation coverage and control failures. The surface temperature shall not exceed 80 °C in the specified condition, and component failures must not create hazardous temperatures. A non-self-resetting thermal cut-out is required where the temperature exceeds the permitted limit. This requirement is important because faults must not create a burn or fire hazard.

  • Construction and components (Clauses 22 and 24) - Heating elements and internal wiring have to remain in their intended position, heating element crossings are not allowed, and the insulation of heating elements and internal wiring has to be integral with the conductors for non-class III construction. Thermostats and self-resetting thermal cut-outs are endurance-tested, and thermal cut-outs used for compliance with the abnormal-operation test shall not be self-resetting. These points shape the mechanical and electrical design of the product.

  • Connection and mechanical strength (Clause 25, 21.101) - Flexible cords are pull-tested, and surface-mounted control units are drop-tested and loaded. That means the controls must survive handling and everyday knocks without creating a safety defect.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 define?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 defines the main product and part names used throughout the tests.

  • ondol-mattress - An appliance with an ondol-plate that contains an embedded heating element and a bed frame that supports the plate.
  • controlled appliance - An appliance that senses temperature changes during normal operation and automatically regulates the average power input.
  • heating element - A heating conductor, such as a heating sheet or insulated wires.
  • control unit - A device, inside or outside the bed frame, used to adjust or regulate the average power input.
  • bed frame - The frame that supports the ondol-plate.
  • normal operation - The test condition used for this product, with the ondol-mattress placed on the floor of the test corner, the bed-frame legs removed, a plywood base in place, and thermal insulation over the ondol-plate.
  • thermal insulation - The specific sheet material defined for the test setup in Annex AA.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 is used by manufacturers of electric ondol-mattresses and their control units, especially teams responsible for electrical design, safety engineering, and product compliance. Test laboratories use it to set up leakage current, electric strength, heating, moisture, and abnormal-operation tests. Quality managers, certification bodies, and buyers use it to check whether a product family, marking set, and instruction set match the safety expectations for this appliance category.

What changed in SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 supersedes EN IEC 60335-2-111:2019 and its amendments and corrigenda, if any. The European foreword states that it adopts the text of IEC 60335-2-111:2024 without modification.

The document also identifies these technical changes relative to the previous edition:

  • alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020
  • conversion of some notes to normative text in Clause 1
  • introduction of test probe 19 in the places where test probe 18 is used

Which standards are used with SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 is used with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1, which provides the general safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances. Annex B of Part 1 is applied with the additional probe 19 conditions for battery-operated appliances.

The standard also references ISO 2439 for measuring the hardness of the thermal insulation in Annex AA. IEC 61032 is used for the test probes, and the document is read in conjunction with SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026/A11:2026.

What does the SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 document contain?

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-111:2026 contains the product-specific safety clauses for ondol-mattresses, starting with scope, references, and definitions, then moving through marking, protection against electric shock, heating, moisture, abnormal operation, construction, and component requirements. It includes test arrangements for leakage current and electric strength in Figure 101, and for thermal insulation positioning in Figure 102.

Annex B gives the battery-related adaptations needed when the appliance is battery-operated. Annex AA defines the thermal insulation used in the test setup, including its physical characteristics and the ISO 2439 hardness method. The bibliography points readers to related appliance safety standards for other heating products and to the medical-use standard that is outside this scope.

Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its
provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.
Guidance documents concerning the application of the safety requirements for appliances can
be accessed via TC 61 supporting documents on the IEC website
https://www.iec.ch/tc61/supportingdocuments
This information is given for the convenience of users of this International Standard and does
not constitute a replacement for the normative text in this standard.
This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such
as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in normal
use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal situations that
can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which electromagnetic
phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.
This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that there
is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply mains.
However, national wiring rules can differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
When a part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with in
Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the part 2 standards have determined that it is
not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general
requirements.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
NOTE 2 Horizontal publications, basic safety publications and group safety publications covering a hazard are not
applicable since they have been taken into consideration when developing the general and particular requirements
for the IEC 60335 series of standards.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, i
