Overview

EN 60512-4-2:2002 (adoption of IEC 60512-4-2:2002) is a European test standard for connectors for electronic equipment that defines a standardized method to assess resistance to partial discharge under specified voltage stress. The standard applies to electromechanical components within the scope of IEC TC 48 (connectors) and supersedes the earlier Test 4b in IEC 60512-2 (1985). Its objective is to verify that a connector can be used at defined voltage conditions without exhibiting partial discharges, which can lead to insulation degradation and reduced service life.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to electromechanical components (primarily connectors) when required by a detail specification.
  • Test objective: Detect and measure partial discharges that occur under dielectric voltage stress.
  • Test method reference: The test is performed in accordance with IEC 60270:2000 - High-voltage test techniques – Partial discharge measurements; EN 60512-4-2 does not replace IEC 60270 but relies on it for measurement technique.
  • Specification-driven parameters: The detail specification must define:
    • the specific test procedure to be used;
    • the acceptance requirement (pass/fail criteria);
    • any deviations from the standard test method.
  • Standardization context: Adopted by CENELEC (normative Annex ZA included); intended to be implemented as a national standard without modification.

Practical applications

  • Ensuring long-term reliability of connectors used in high-voltage or high-reliability electronics where partial discharge could cause failure (for instance, power distribution, industrial electronics, test & measurement equipment).
  • Qualification testing during connector design and development to verify insulation performance and detect manufacturing or material defects.
  • Production or batch testing when required by a product detail specification or procurement standard.
  • Use by test laboratories, QA teams, and compliance engineers who need to certify that connectors meet dielectric stress performance requirements.

Who uses this standard

  • Connector and interconnect manufacturers
  • Design and reliability engineers
  • Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Procurement/specification writers and quality assurance teams

Related standards

  • IEC 60270:2000 - High-voltage test techniques - Partial discharge measurements (normative reference)
  • IEC 60512 (other parts) - Tests and measurements for connectors

For implementation, refer to the detail specification that invokes EN 60512-4-2:2002 and follow IEC 60270 measurement practices to define exact test voltages, conditioning, and acceptance criteria.
