Gypsum binders and gypsum plasters - Part 1: Definitions and requirements

This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance of powder products based on gypsum binder for building purposes. This includes premixed gypsum building plasters for plastering of walls and ceilings inside buildings where they are applied as a finishing material which can be decorated. These products are specially formulated to meet their application requirements by the use of additives/admixtures, aggregates and other binders. Gypsum and gypsum based building plasters for manual and mechanical applications are included.
This European Standard also applies to gypsum binders both for direct use on site and for further processing into gypsum blocks, gypsum plasterboards, gypsum boards with fibrous reinforcement, gypsum fibrous plasterwork and gypsum ceiling elements. Gypsum mortar for internal not load bearing partitions not exposed to water is also included.
Calcium sulfate used as binder for floor screeds is not covered by this European Standard.
This European Standard defines the reference tests for technical characteristics and provides for the evaluation of conformity of the products covered by this European Standard.
Building lime, as calcium hydroxide, can be used as an additional binder together with gypsum binder. If gypsum binder is the principle active binding component in a plaster then this plaster is covered by this European Standard. If building lime is the principle active binding component in a plaster then the plaster is covered by EN 998-1.

mechanische Verarbeitung.

Overview

EN 13279-1:2008 - issued by CEN - defines gypsum binders and gypsum plasters used in building works, giving definitions, product types and performance requirements. The standard covers premixed powder products based on gypsum binder for interior use (walls, ceilings, finishing coats), for both manual and mechanical (projection) application. It also applies to gypsum binders used directly on site or for further processing into gypsum blocks, plasterboards, fibrous boards and ceiling elements. Exclusions include calcium sulfate binders for floor screeds and plasters where lime is the principal binder (these fall under EN 998‑1).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Definitions and product family: clear terminology for gypsum binder, gypsum building plaster, gypsum‑based plaster, gypsum‑lime plaster, lightweight plasters, finishing products and special-purpose plasters (acoustic, thermal, fire protection, thin‑coat, fibrous casts, gypsum mortar).
  • Product classification (A / B / C types): designations for binders (A) and plasters (B) and special plasters (C), enabling consistent labelling and specification.
  • Composition thresholds: criteria such as when a plaster is considered gypsum‑based (e.g., gypsum as principal active binding component) and the role of added lime.
  • Performance requirements: reference tests cover setting behaviour, mechanical properties (flexural/compressive strength, surface hardness, adhesive strength), and declared initial setting time. The standard also requires evaluation of conformity against these characteristics (see EN 13279‑2 for test methods).
  • End‑use characteristics:
    • Reaction to fire: products with <1% organic content are classified A1 (no contribution to fire) without testing; higher organic content requires EN 13501‑1 testing.
    • Thermal properties: guidance values for thermal conductivity of hardened gypsum plasters (dry, at 23 °C, 50% RH) are provided - e.g., 0.18 W/(m·K) at 600 kg/m3 up to 0.56 W/(m·K) at 1500 kg/m3.
    • Acoustic and fire resistance: declared where relevant; tested per referenced standards.
  • Marking, labelling and conformity: requirements for product designation, labelling, packaging and conformity assessment.

Practical applications

EN 13279‑1:2008 is practical for:

  • Specifying interior plaster products for residential and commercial buildings
  • Developing product data sheets (composition, setting time, strengths, thermal/acoustic performance)
  • Quality control and conformity assessment for gypsum binder and plaster manufacturers
  • Architects, specifiers and contractors selecting plasters for finishing, fire protection, acoustic or thermal insulation applications
  • Test laboratories performing performance verification (in conjunction with EN 13279‑2)

Who should use this standard

  • Gypsum product manufacturers and R&D teams
  • Construction material specifiers and architects
  • Building contractors and plastering specialists (manual & projection systems)
  • Certification bodies and testing laboratories
  • Compliance officers managing CE marking and product declarations
