Overview

SIST EN ISO 20999:2026Textiles – Determination of total halogens in textile products – Combustion and ion chromatography (C-IC) test method – establishes a standardized procedure for determining the total content of halogens (including fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine) in textile products. The standard, developed by SIST and aligned with ISO 20999:2026, applies to all combustible components of textile products, such as fibers, fabrics, plastic parts (including coatings), and wood. By using combustion followed by ion chromatography (C-IC), this method enables reliable quantitative measurement of halogens, essential for ensuring product safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental protection within the textile industry.

Key Topics

  • Test Methodology: The standard specifies the use of combustion in an oxygen-rich environment to decompose the sample, followed by absorption of resulting gases and analysis by ion chromatography to quantify halogen content.
  • Scope of Materials: Applicable to all combustible materials in textile products-ranging from synthetic and natural fibers to plastic elements and coated surfaces.
  • Halogens Covered: Accurate assessment of total fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine, regardless of their chemical form in the sample.
  • Test Apparatus: Outlines necessary laboratory equipment, including a combustion system, ion chromatograph with conductivity detector, analytical balance, and glassware.
  • Reporting Requirements: Specifies minimum information to be included in test reports, such as sample identification, halogen content expressed in mg/kg, testing conditions, deviations, and date of analysis.
  • Reliability Data: Presents interlaboratory trial results for the repeatability and reproducibility of the method, underscoring its reliability for chlorinated, brominated, or fluorinated textile analysis.

Applications

The standardized C-IC method supports a wide range of textile industry needs, including:

  • Quality Control and Certification: Verifying products for low or controlled halogen levels, crucial for meeting both international regulations and eco-label requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Supporting adherence to global environmental and product safety legislation, such as restrictions on hazardous substances in consumer goods.
  • Supply Chain Management: Providing a reliable test method for manufacturers, suppliers, and buyers to assess the chemical composition of textile materials and components.
  • Research and Development: Facilitating material screening and process optimization in the development of textiles with specific chemical profiles or advanced safety features.
  • Environmental Protection: Assisting in monitoring and reducing the release of toxic halogen compounds during textile production, processing, and disposal.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compliance and best practices in textile testing and analysis, consider these related standards:

  • ISO 3696: Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods
  • ISO 3071: Textiles - Determination of pH of aqueous extract
  • ISO 1833 series: Textiles - Quantitative chemical analysis
  • ISO 14184-1: Textiles - Determination of formaldehyde release
  • ISO 17075: Leather - Chemical tests - Determination of chromium content

Practical Value

Adopting SIST EN ISO 20999:2026 ensures consistency and accuracy in determining total halogen content in textile products. This benefits:

  • Manufacturers seeking to ensure product conformity before market release.
  • Testing laboratories performing routine or accreditation-critical analyses.
  • Regulatory authorities monitoring compliance with health and environmental standards.
  • Retailers and brands requiring transparent, traceable product quality insight throughout their supply chains.

By implementing standardized methods such as combustion and ion chromatography for halogen determination, organizations strengthen product quality, consumer safety, and environmental stewardship across the textile sector.

Introduction
The determination of the total content of various halogens can be used as a screening method for harmful
substances whose constituents include one or more of these halogens. For example, the fluorine content of
a textile can indicate that it contains legally restricted perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances
(PFAS) or other organic fluorine. High chlorine and bromine concentrations can indicate the potential
presence of flame retardants or biocides in the textile. It should be noted that the test method is not able to
