Overview
SIST EN 13025-3:2006 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for removable head (open head) round steel and tinplate containers with nominal capacities of 20,000 ml, 25,000 ml, and 30,000 ml. These light gauge metal containers are designed primarily for industrial packaging applications, emphasizing durability, material quality, and standardized dimensions. The steel and tinplate materials used must not exceed a thickness of 0.49 mm, ensuring lightweight yet robust containers suitable for various contents.
This standard provides clear guidelines on container dimensions, materials, construction, and finishing requirements, facilitating uniformity and interchangeability across manufacturers and users within Europe’s packaging industry.
Key Topics
- Container Types: The standard covers both straight-sided and tapered cylindrical containers with removable heads, commonly referred to as open head drums.
- Nominal Capacities: Focused on containers with nominal filling volumes of 20 liters, 25 liters, and 30 liters.
- Material Specifications:
- Steel (FePo1) according to EN 10130.
- Tinplate in accordance with EN 10202.
- Construction Details:
- Longitudinal seams must be mechanically seamed or welded.
- Bodies and fixed ends joined by seaming or equivalent.
- Removable lids equipped with gaskets compatible with container content.
- Closure options include inserted flange type closures (EN 12928) and plastic spout closures (EN 13029).
- Dimensions: Precise dimensional requirements for internal and external diameters, overall height, and total capacity are provided to guarantee consistency across manufacturers.
- Finish Requirements: Internal and external finishes must be suitable for the chemical and physical nature of the container’s intended contents, with purchaser and manufacturer agreeing on specifics.
Applications
SIST EN 13025-3:2006 containers are essential in packaging solutions where portability, reusability, and secure containment are critical. Common applications include:
- Chemical Industry: Safe transport and storage of liquid chemicals requiring compatibility with metal containers.
- Paints and Coatings: Ideal for packaging large batches of paints, varnishes, and industrial coatings, where secure sealing is critical.
- Food and Beverage: When approved finishes and gasket materials are used, containers can package food-grade products requiring robust metal packaging.
- Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Sectors: For bulk storage and transport of raw materials or products needing contamination protection.
- Manufacturing and Logistics: Containers facilitate efficient handling, stacking, and shipping due to standardized sizes and closures.
The removable head design allows easy access for filling, sampling, and cleaning, increasing versatility for varying industrial needs.
Related Standards
SIST EN 13025-3:2006 works in conjunction with several related standards to ensure comprehensive packaging solutions:
- EN 10130 – Specifies technical delivery conditions for cold-rolled low carbon steel suitable for container fabrication.
- EN 10131 – Defines tolerances on dimensions and shape for steel flat products, ensuring precise manufacturing.
- EN 10202 – Covers electrolytic tinplate and chromium-coated steel materials for packaging.
- EN 12928 – Details inserted flange type closure systems for steel drums between 17 to 230 liters.
- EN 13029 – Defines apertures for plug-in plastic closures used with metal packaging.
- EN 13025-1 – Specifies nominal filling volumes for general use metal containers up to 40 liters, providing broader guidelines beyond part 3.
This suite of standards ensures that manufacturers and users can rely on consistent quality, compatibility, and safety for steel and tinplate packaging containers across multiple industries.
