oSIST prEN 12907:2026 is the Slovene publication of the CEN draft European Standard for pyrolyzed coal material used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. It specifies the material’s description, physical and chemical requirements, test methods, and guidance on use, handling, marking, transport, and storage for manufacturers, suppliers, laboratories, and water-treatment users.
What does oSIST prEN 12907:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN 12907:2026 applies to pyrolyzed coal material used for water treatment. It covers the material itself, how it is identified and described, and how its key properties are checked before use.
The document is arranged in clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, description, physical properties, chemical properties, specific properties, test methods, and labelling, transportation and storage. It also includes an informative annex with background information on origin, properties, use, hydraulic behaviour, safe handling, and emergency actions.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 12907:2026?
oSIST prEN 12907:2026 sets out the main characteristics a user or supplier should verify before the material is put into service. In practice, this means checking the product identity, grading, density, purity, and leaching behaviour against the standard’s requirements.
- Identification and appearance (Clause 4, Clause 5): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 identifies the product as carbon-based pyrolyzed coal material and describes it as a brown to black granular material with a porous structure. It should be homogeneous and free from visible extraneous matter, so users can recognise the intended filter media and avoid contaminated lots.
- Particle size distribution (Clause 5.2): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 requires particle size to be defined by size descriptors or by particle size range with limits on oversize and undersize depending on the application. This matters because the grading affects filter performance, bed stability, and whether the material suits a filtration layer, single-media filter, or support layer.
- Bulk density (Clause 5.3): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 specifies separate requirements for bulk density in loose and packed condition. This helps with design, transport calculations, and filling of filters and containers.
- Chemical composition and purity (Clause 6): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 requires the commercial product to meet limits for carbon content, ash, and volatile matter, and it sets minimum purity expectations for use in drinking-water treatment. Users need this to confirm the material comes from the expected process and to judge whether it is suitable for the intended water quality.
- Water-extractable substances (Clause 6.2.2): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 limits leachable substances such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, antimony, selenium, cyanide, and PAH. This is the main health-protection check because it assesses what could pass from the filter media into treated water.
- Sampling and test methods (Clause 8): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 requires production-site sampling for conformity assessment and refers the analytical methods to EN 12902. This is important because transport and handling can change the sample, and the laboratory method must be consistent.
- Delivery, marking, and storage (Clause 9): oSIST prEN 12907:2026 requires delivery in bags, semi-bulk containers, or bulk, with clean or dedicated transport equipment, and specific marking on packages or delivery documents. It also gives storage guidance for dry, clean conditions, which helps preserve product quality until use.
What terms does oSIST prEN 12907:2026 define?
- Pyrolyzed coal material: thermally treated coal used as a filter material in water treatment.
- Particle size distribution: the way the material’s粒 sizes are distributed, used to describe grading and filter suitability.
- Effective size (d10): a particle-size descriptor used with the grading requirements to characterise the finer part of the material.
- Uniformity coefficient (U): a measure of how uniform the particle sizes are, which affects filtration behaviour.
- Bulk density loose: the density of the material in a loose, uncompressed state.
- Bulk density packed: the density after packing, used for storage, filling, and transport calculations.
- Water-extractable substances: substances that can leach from the material into water under the specified test conditions.
- PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons): a group of organic compounds tracked here as the sum of specified PAH components in the leaching test.
Who uses oSIST prEN 12907:2026?
oSIST prEN 12907:2026 is used by manufacturers and suppliers of filter media, by laboratories that test particle size, density, composition, and leaching, and by water-treatment operators who select or verify filter material for open or closed, single or multi-media filters. It is also relevant to buyers and quality managers who need to check conformity, marking, delivery condition, and storage practice.
What changed in oSIST prEN 12907:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN 12907:2026 supersedes EN 12907:2009. The foreword states two technical changes: the bulk density range was extended, and the storage conditions were updated.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN 12907:2026?
- EN 12901: provides the terms and definitions used for inorganic supporting and filtering materials.
- EN 12902: provides the test methods referred to for sampling and analysis, including particle size, density, carbon, ash, volatile matter, and water-extractable substances.
What does the oSIST prEN 12907:2026 document contain?
The document contains the product description, property requirements, and test-related instructions that a technical user needs to check conformity. It includes tables for composition and water-extractable substances, and informative Annex A gives background data on raw materials, manufacturing, typical composition, particle-size examples, density, porosity, use in filters, hydraulic behaviour, safe handling, and emergency procedures.
