Overview

SIST EN 15501:2016/oprA1:2019 is a European standard amendment focusing on thermal insulation products used in building equipment and industrial installations. It specifically relates to factory-made expanded perlite (EP) and exfoliated vermiculite (EV) products. This amendment modifies EN 15501:2015 to ensure compliance with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). The key objectives include updating normative references, revising fire reaction classifications, and enhancing editorial clarity.

This standard is fundamental for manufacturers, specifiers, and quality control professionals in the thermal insulation industry, ensuring that products are both high-performing and compliant with European regulatory requirements.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application: The standard covers characteristics and performance requirements for factory-made expanded perlite and exfoliated vermiculite insulation products.
  • Regulatory Alignment: Implements changes required by the CPR (Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011), focusing on harmonization for CE marking and market acceptance in the EU.
  • Normative References Update: References key standards for testing and product evaluation, including EN 16516 for the assessment of dangerous substance emissions.
  • Product Characteristics: Specifies requirements for thermal conductivity, reaction to fire, dimensions, durability, and release of dangerous substances.
  • Fire Classification: Adjustments include the introduction of reaction to fire classes “E” and “F” and the removal of continuous glowing combustion requirements.
  • Annexes Update: Incorporates a new Annex ZA that clarifies the relationship with EU regulations, product marking, and conformity assessment procedures.
  • Factory Production Control (FPC): Specifies frequency and methodology for testing essential characteristics, providing a robust framework for quality assurance.

Applications

Factory-made expanded perlite (EP) and exfoliated vermiculite (EV) insulation products are widely used in several key domains:

  • Building Equipment: These materials serve as thermal insulators in HVAC systems, mechanical piping, and energy infrastructure within both residential and commercial buildings.
  • Industrial Installations: Utilized for insulating process piping, equipment, and tanks, safeguarding against energy loss and providing fire protection.
  • Construction Compliance: The standard ensures that insulation products meet European performance, safety, and quality requirements, aiding manufacturers in achieving CE marking and broadening market access.
  • Sustainability and Indoor Air Quality: By referencing EN 16516 for the assessment of dangerous substance emissions, the standard supports healthier indoor environments and eco-friendly building practices.

Related Standards

For comprehensive compliance and best practices in thermal insulation, the following related standards are particularly relevant:

  • EN 15501:2015: The parent standard detailing base requirements for EP and EV insulation products.
  • EN 16516: Provides the method for determining emissions from construction products into indoor air.
  • EN 13172: Relates to factory production control, essential for the assessment and verification of constancy of performance (AVCP).
  • EN ISO 13787: Specifies methods for determining thermal conductivity.
  • EN ISO 1182, EN ISO 1716, EN 13823, EN ISO 11925-2: Fire testing standards referenced for determining reaction-to-fire classifications.

By adhering to SIST EN 15501:2016/oprA1:2019 and its associated standards, manufacturers and industry stakeholders can ensure that thermal insulation products not only meet regulatory requirements but also deliver reliable, high-quality, and safe performance for end users.

Keywords: thermal insulation, expanded perlite, exfoliated vermiculite, building equipment, industrial installations, Construction Products Regulation, CE marking, fire classification, EN 15501, SIST, factory production control.

by the manufacturer in the DoP shall be demonstrated by:
— Determination of the product type (Type testing);
— Factory Production Control (FPC) by the manufacturer, including product assessment;
— Initial inspection of manufacturing plant and of Factory Production Control (FPC);
— Continuing surveillance, assessment and evaluation of Factory Production Control (FPC).
The manufacturer shall always retain the overall control and shall have the necessary means to take
responsibility for the conformity of the product with its declared performance(s).
If a manufacturer decides to group his products, it shall be done in accordance with EN 13172.
7.2 Type testing
All performances related to characteristics included in this standard shall be determined when the
manufacturer intends to declare the respective performances unless the standard gives provisions for
declaring them without performing tests (e.g. use of previously existing data, CWFT and conventionally
accepted performance).
Type testing for the thermal conductivity curve shall be carried out in accordance with EN ISO 13787.
For Type testing only one test result is required for the thermal conductivity curve and the maximum
and minimum service temperature."
