Overview

EN 14617-16:2005 (CEN) is the European test method for agglomerated stone modular tiles, specifying how to determine dimensional characteristics, geometric properties and surface quality. Published March 2005, it forms part of the EN 14617 series of test methods for agglomerated stone. The standard defines repeatable measurement procedures and reporting requirements to support product conformity, quality control and specification compliance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of length, width, thickness, straightness of sides, rectangularity, surface flatness (centre curvature, edge curvature, warpage) and surface quality of modular tiles (typically 12 mm thickness).
  • Test sample size: Ten whole tiles of each type are submitted for measurements.
  • Length & width: Measured with vernier calipers (or equivalent) to 0.1 mm, at positions 5 mm from corners. Averages are taken per tile and for the sample (40 measurements for square tiles; 20 per dimension for oblong tiles).
  • Thickness: Measured with a micrometer screw gauge at the thickest point within the four diagonal segments (four measurements per tile, nearest 0.1 mm).
  • Straightness & rectangularity: Measured using an instrument with supporting and locating studs, a dial gauge and a calibrating plate. Straightness is the deviation at the centre of a side; rectangularity is the corner deviation measured 5 mm from the corner. Results are expressed as a percentage of the relevant side length.
  • Surface flatness (curvature and warpage): Measured on three studs with dial gauges (stud centres typically 10 mm from tile sides). Centre curvature and warpage are expressed as a percentage of the diagonal; edge curvature as a percentage of length/width (or in mm where spacers apply).
  • Surface quality: Definitions and visual criteria for defects and features (e.g., cracks, detachments, dry spots, pin-holes, specks, chips, irregular edges, polishing defects). Lighting and inspection conditions are referenced to ensure consistent visual assessment.
  • Reporting: The standard prescribes detailed test report contents (references, manufacturer, individual measurements, averages, deviations expressed in mm or % as required).

Applications and users

  • Tile manufacturers - product development, quality control, verification against product standards.
  • Testing laboratories - routine conformity testing, certification and acceptance testing.
  • Specifiers, architects and consultants - validating product tolerances and installation suitability.
  • Buyers and procurement teams - verifying delivered lots against declared sizes and surface quality.
  • Regulatory bodies and standards authors - harmonisation with product standards.
