This document describes requirements, test procedures and information to be provided by the manufacturer for protective ventilation systems to provide breathing air to operator's stations on earth-moving machinery used in contaminated areas.
This document gives additional requirements to the common safety requirements of EN 474-1 Earth-moving machinery – Safety – part 1: General requirements and to the machine specific parts of the EN 474 series and shall be used in conjunction with these as applicable.
This document does not repeat the requirements from the EN 474-series but adds or replaces the requirements as applicable for Earth-moving machinery.

Dieses Dokument gilt für Schutzbelüftungssysteme zur Bereitstellung von Atemluft für Bedienstationen von Erdbaumaschinen, die in kontaminierten Bereichen eingesetzt werden. Ihr Zweck ist, die Exposition des Bedieners (Fahrers) gegenüber gefährlichen Stoffen beim Einsatz von Erdbaumaschinen in kontaminierten Bereichen zu begrenzen. Dieses Dokument beschreibt Anforderungen, Prüfverfahren und vom Hersteller bereitzustellende Informationen für Schutzbelüftungssysteme zur Atemluftversorgung von Bedienstationen auf Erdbaumaschinen, die in kontaminierten Bereichen zum Einsatz kommen.
Dieses Dokument enthält zusätzliche Anforderungen an die allgemeinen Sicherheitsanforderungen der EN 474 1 „Erdbaumaschinen – Sicherheit – Teil 1: Allgemeine Anforderungen“ und an maschinenspezifische Teile der Normenreihe EN 474.
Dieses Dokument wiederholt nicht die Anforderungen der Normenreihe EN 474, sondern ergänzt oder ersetzt die Anforderungen, die für Erdbaumaschinen gelten.

Le présent document est applicable aux systèmes de ventilation de protection destinés à fournir de l'air respirable aux postes de l'opérateur des engins de terrassement utilisés dans des zones contaminées. Son objectif est de limiter l'exposition de l'opérateur (conducteur) aux agents dangereux lors de l'utilisation d'engins de terrassement dans des zones contaminées. Le présent document décrit les prescriptions, les modes opératoires d'essai et les informations à fournir par le fabricant pour les systèmes de ventilation de protection destinés à fournir de l'air respirable aux postes de l’opérateur des engins de terrassement utilisés dans des zones contaminées.
Le présent document fournit des prescriptions supplémentaires aux prescriptions communes de sécurité de l'EN 474-1 "Engins de terrassement — Sécurité — Partie 1 : Prescriptions générales" et aux parties spécifiques des machines de la série EN 474.

Introduction
This document is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100.
This document is of relevance in particular for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance etc.).
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the
above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
— machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);
— service providers, e.g. for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises);
— consumers (in case of machinery intended for use by consumers).
The above-mentioned stakeholder groups have been given the possibility to participate in the drafting
process of this document.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events
are covered are indicated in the scope of this document. When provisions of this type C standard are
different from those which are stated in type A or B standards, the provisions of this type C standard take
precedence over the provisions of the other standards, for machines that have been designed and built
according to the provisions of this type C standard.
When operating earth-moving machinery used in contaminated areas, the operator can be exposed to
hazardous agents such as chemical agents in the form of dust, aerosols, gases or vapours or biological
agents in the form of aerosols. Protective ventilation systems of earth-moving machinery providing
protection against these hazardous agents can reduce operator exposure to airborne contaminants
present in contaminated areas.
The objective of this document is to improve the operator protection by using the protective ventilation
systems of earth-moving machinery used in contaminated areas. For this purpose, this document
specifies requirements, test procedures and the operator information to be provided, in particular with
regard to installation, use and maintenance operations.

1 Scope
This document is applicable to protective ventilation systems to provide breathing air to operator's
stations on earth-moving machinery used in contaminated areas. Its purpose is to limit the exposure of
the operator (driver) to hazardous agents when earth-moving machinery is used in contaminated areas.
This document describes requirements, test procedures and information to be provided by the
manufacturer for protective ventilation systems to provide breathing air to operator's stations on earth-
moving machinery used in contaminated areas.
This document gives additional requirements to the common safety requirements of EN 474-1 “Earth-
moving machinery – Safety – Part 1: General requirements” and to the machine specific parts of the
EN 474 series.
This document does not repeat the requirements from the EN 474 series but adds or replaces the
requirements as applicable for Earth-moving machinery.
This document does not cover:
— the safety requirement to be used for any specific application;
— the relevant filter performance or filter class for any particular application;
— the actual cab performance in the field application;
— the filtration performance in the field application;
— the field durability of filters.
This document is not applicable to protective ventilation systems which are manufactured before the
date of its publication as an EN.

4 Safety requirements and/or protective/risk reduction measures
4.1 General
This document describes requirements, test procedures and information to be provided by the
manufacturer for protective ventilation systems to provide breathing air to operator's stations on earth-
moving machinery used in contaminated areas.
NOTE Filters performances and filters are depending of risk assessment and national regulation.

4.2 General requirements
4.2.1 Requirements for the operator's station
4.2.1.1 HVAC system
EN 474-1:2022, 4.3.2 applies with the following addition:
The operator's station shall be equipped with a HVAC in accordance with ISO 10263-4:2009.
4.2.1.2 Doors and windows
Doors, windows, flaps and their locking devices shall be so designed that no hazards will be created to
the operator during opening under pressure, e.g. by abrupt movements.
4.2.1.3 Respiratory protective device
A place for keeping an appropriate respiratory protective device (depending on the kind of protective
ventilation systems) to rescue oneself (means of escape) shall be provided at the operator's station and
be easily accessible.
4.2.2 Requirements for providing breathing air
4.2.2.1 Breathing air distribution
Consistent breathing air inlet and distribution shall be provided at the operator’s station. Breathing air
coming into the cab shall not be on floor level to avoid stirring of dust.
4.2.2.2 Breathing air filtration
Air inside the operator’s station shall be filtered by a recirculation unit. The filters shall be classified H13
according to dust classes to EN 1822-1:2019.
NOTE The filter class may depend on the application and on the country regulation.
4.2.2.3 Recirculating air flow rate

The filtered recirculating airflow shall be at least 50 m /h.
4.2.2.4 Fresh air flow rate
For machinery with dust filter units or gas filter units

The protective ventilation system shall provide at least 30 m /h of filtered fresh air.

The breathing air volume flow rate provided shall not exceed 120 m /h.
Air flow rate shall be measured according to Annex B.
For machinery with breathing compressors air used as protective ventilation systems
3
The air flow volume provided to the operator’s station shall have a minimum amount to 12 m per person
per hour under all normal use operating conditions.
Air flow rate shall be measured according to Annex B.
Instead of measuring the volume flow of the breathing air provided, carbon dioxide (CO ) can

alternatively be measured by a measuring device with alarm threshold. In the process, carbon dioxide
shall not exceed 0,18 % by vol. When this value is exceeded, the measuring device shall trigger an acoustic
or visual alarm.

The measuring points of the measuring devices shall not be located in an area that corresponds to the
position of the operator’s mouth and nose, so that neither the breathing air provided at the inlet nor the
exhalation air at the outlet are measured. If necessary, the filament position centre point according to
ISO 5006:2017 can provide orientation. Malfunctions on measuring devices shall trigger an alarm by self-
monitoring.
4.2.2.5 Information on operating condition of protective ventilation system
An information plate shall be fitted easily visible within the operator's station to communicate the
following information:
"The system to provide breathing air shall be running while the openings (e.g. window(s), door(s)) of the
operator's station are closed!".
Pictorials may alternatively be used.
4.2.2.6 Emission sound pressure level at the operator's station
EN 474-1:2022, 4.13.2.2 applies.
Protective ventilation systems shall be so arranged, designed or capsuled that the permissible emission
sound pressure level (LpA) of 80 dB(A) at the operator's ear will not be exceeded during operation of the
machine.
4.2.2.7 Visibility
Protective ventilation systems shall be so arranged that the operator has sufficient visibility from the
operator's station in relation to the travel and work areas of the machine.
The requirements for the operator's field of view shall comply with EN 474-1:2022, 4.8.1.
For hydraulic excavators, the requirement for the operator’s field of view shall comply with
EN 474-5:2022, 4.6. These requirements shall also be met if breathing air supply systems are installed on
the earth-moving machine.
4.2.2.8 Vibration
Protective ventilation systems and their fastening system on the earth-moving machine shall withstand
a vibration test as described in EN ISO 19014-3:2018, 5.6.
4.2.2.9 Access
EN 474-1:2022, 4.2.1 applies.
Access to protective ventilation systems and locations for their mounting and maintenance shall comply
with EN ISO 2867:2011 "Earth-moving machinery – Access systems".
4.2.2.10 Maintenance
EN 474-1:2022, 4.22.1 applies.
Openings for mounting and maintenance of protective ventilation systems shall comply with
EN ISO 2860:2008 "Earth-moving machinery – Minimum access dimensions".
4.2.2.11 Filter unit handling
The filter unit (e.g. dust filter unit, gas filter unit) shall be provided with measures for safe handling.
4.2.2.12 Ventilation system mounting
By mounting of protective ventilation systems

— access to other maintenance- and control stations on earth-moving machinery shall not be
obstructed
— the protective effect of roll-over protective structures (e.g. ROPS, TOPS) and protective structures
(e.g. FOPS) shall not be affected;
— installation of a protective ventilation system shall meet the requirements of EN 474-1:2022, 4.2.1
Access Systems and 4.3.2.3. Alternative opening (emergency exit).
4.2.2.13 Overpressure of the station
The operator's station and the breathing air inlet shall be so designed that during operation an
overpressure of at least 100 Pascal is maintained and an overpressure of 300 Pascal cannot be exceeded.
NOTE This limitation is applicable for the whole range of ventilation air flow, if relevant.
On the monitoring device shall be an indication that shows the operator that the recirculation filter is
fitted in the recirculation unit. If the filter is not fitted in the unit, the monitoring device shall give an
audible and visual alarm.
4.2.3 Requirements for control devices
4.2.3.1 Protective ventilation system control
The protective ventilation system shall start and stop automatically by starting and stopping the engine
or by activate the ignition of the earth moving machine.
During operation it shall be possible for the operator to start and stop the protective ventilation system
manually (e.g. in case of system malfunction, abnormal function). In this case the monitoring device shall
give an audible and visual alarm.
Further operation of the protective ventilation system when the engine stopped shall be indicated by an
acoustic and visual alarm to the operator, e.g. in order to avoid discharge of the battery.
4.2.3.2 Overpressure control
A permanent indicator for the overpressure at the operator’s station shall be provided within the
operator’s field of view.
It can be a stand-alone unit or an integrated part of the dash panel of the construction machine, placed in
the operator’s front field of view.
The indicator shall at least comprise the range of 0 Pascal to 400 Pascal ± 5 %. Accurate to a 10 Pascal
resolution.
The upper and lower limited value for the overpressure shall be clearly identified or be permanently
marked on the display.
4.2.3.3 Pressure warning device
In addition to the indicators a warning light and an audible warning device (horn) shall be provided
indicating a decrease of pressure below the lower limited value or an increase of pressure higher than
the permitted upper limited value to the operator. The warning device shall act with a delay time of less
than 20 s.
4.2.3.4 Warning of the activation of the protective ventilation system
A green (depend on the regulation of the country) light with an output of at least 40 Lumens output shall
be mounted so clearly visible on the machine or the protective ventilation system that a casual observer

can notice the activation of the contamination protective system at all times and from all sides of the
machine.
The light shall automatically switch on when the protective ventilation system is activated and the cab
pressure is in between the limits.
4.2.3.5 Filter set warning
On the monitoring device shall be an indication that shows the operator that the filter is fitted in the filter
unit. If the filter is not fitted in the unit, the monitoring device shall give an acoustic or visual alarm.
4.2.4 Moving parts
Hazards by shearing, crushing or drawing-in by movements of machine parts and equipment shall be
prevented by design. Access to dangerous moving parts shall be prevented. This can be achieved by fitting
fixed or interlocked movable guards in accordance with EN ISO 14120:2015.
NOTE 1 For fans and rotary valves, fixed guards have been proven to be effective.
NOTE 2 EN ISO 12100:2010 sets out the general principles for the guarding of moving parts.
Fixed guards shall be installed when access is rarely necessary. Fixed guards that are to be removed as a
part of maintenance procedures, described in the operator's manual, shall be fixed by systems that can
be opened or removed only with tools. These guards fixing systems shall remain attached to the guards
or to the machinery when the guards are removed.
Where possible, fixed guards shall be incapable of remaining in place without their fixings.
4.2.5 Protection against electrical hazards
The requirements of EN 60204-1:2018 apply unless stated otherwise in this document.
The requirements regarding prevention of electric shock due to direct contact and the requirements
regarding protection against short circuits and overloading shall comply with EN 60204-1:2018.
The protection against electric shock due to indirect contact shall be ensured by automatic isolation
(circuit breaker or fuse) of the electrical power supply of the machine by the operation of a protective
device installed by the user in the line powering the machine.
Depending on the location/installation of electrical and electronic components, the following degrees of
protection are required:
— electronic controls, connectors in control circuits, multi-pin connectors and control switches external
to the cab, shall have a minimum protection of IP 55 of EN 60529:1991, EN 60529:1991/A1:2000
and EN 60529:1991/A2:2013;
— components installed in the operator's cab or protected against the environment, the protection shall
be designed and executed to safeguard a correct function under expected and intended conditions.
Live parts in electrical enclosures shall not be accessible in accordance with EN 60204-1:2018. Fire risk
is not present where power circuits are protected against over current in accordance with
EN 60204-1:2018.
4.2.6 Electromagnetic compatibility
Ventilation protective system fitted earth-moving machines shall comply with the requirements of
electromagnetic compatibility as specified in EN ISO 13766-1:2018.

4.3.1.1 General
Dust filter units and gas filter units shall be so arranged, designed and tested that permanent seal seat of
filters in the casing is safeguarded.
4.3.1.2 Tightness of the air delivery and filtration system
Particle filter units and gas filter units shall comply with EN 15695-1:2017, Annex B.
4.3.1.3 Filters design
Filters shall be designed in such way that they cannot be installed in the reverse flow-through direction
and shall be readily replaceable without use of special tools and without any significant loss of captured
