Overview
SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 is the Slovene adoption of the European Standard EN 301 843-5, developed by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). This part of the standard series specifies Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements for marine radio equipment and services, with a focus on MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for maritime applications.
The standard details specific conditions for EMC testing, performance assessment, and criteria for medium frequency (MF) and high frequency (HF) marine radiotelephone systems and their related ancillary equipment. The requirements ensure reliable and interference-free operation of marine communication equipment aboard ships, thus supporting maritime safety and compliance with European legislation.
Key Topics
- EMC Requirements for Marine Radio Equipment: Outlines the applicable EMC test conditions and performance criteria for MF/HF transmitters, receivers, and ancillary equipment used in the maritime mobile service.
- Test Setups and Conditions: Specifies arrangements for test signals, artificial antennae, exclusion bands, and modulation requirements relevant to the EMC testing environment typically found on ships.
- Performance Assessment: Covers methods of assessing conformance, including testing emission limits, immunity to interference, equipment classification, and the minimum performance required for both transmitters and receivers.
- Ancillary Equipment: Includes requirements for additional receivers, microphones, speakers, and interfaces connected to primary marine radiotelephone systems.
- Immunity and Emission Measurements: Details the conditions under which emission and immunity tests are conducted and references the applicable tables in EN 301 843-1.
- Special Maritime Conditions: Adapts EMC criteria to account for specific maritime environments, including requirements drawn from EN 60945, which covers general marine navigation and radio equipment standards.
Applications
SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005 is essential for:
- Ship Equipment Manufacturers: Ensuring that MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers meet stringent EMC requirements, thus reducing the risk of harmful interference and equipment malfunction at sea.
- Maritime Communications System Designers: Providing a clear framework for integrating MF/HF radiotelephony into shipboard communication systems with tested compatibility and reliability.
- Ship Owners and Operators: Assuring compliance with European legislative requirements, including the EMC Directive and Radio Equipment Directive, to facilitate safe marine operations and effective communication.
- Conformity Assessment Bodies and Testing Laboratories: Serving as an authoritative reference for conducting EMC conformity evaluations and certification of maritime MF/HF radio equipment.
- Marine Safety and Regulatory Authorities: Supporting the enforcement of standards that promote secure and reliable maritime communication infrastructure.
Typical equipment covered includes:
- MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers intended for fixed installation on ships, operating within the frequency range of 1 605 kHz to 27.5 MHz.
- Associated ancillary devices as defined in related standards.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance and integration, the following standards are closely related to SIST EN 301 843-5 V1.1.1:2005:
- EN 301 843-1: Common technical requirements for marine radio equipment and services (general EMC requirements for maritime applications).
- EN 300 373-2: Harmonized standard for maritime mobile transmitters and receivers in the MF and HF bands (essential requirements under article 3.2 of the R&TTE Directive).

Committee Electromagnetic compatibility and Radio spectrum Matters (ERM).
The present document has been produced by ETSI in response to a mandate from the European Commission issued
under the Council Directive 98/34/EC [6] (as amended) laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the
field of technical standards and regulation.
The present document, together with EN 301 843-1 [1], is intended to become a Harmonized Standard, the reference of
which will be published in the Official Journal of the European Communities referencing the Council Directive on the
approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to electromagnetic compatibility ("the EMC Directive")
(89/336/EEC [3] as amended), and Directive 1999/5/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 March
1999 on radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment and the mutual recognition of their conformity
(the "R&TTE Directive" [2]).
The present document is part 5 of a multi-part deliverable. Full details of the entire series can be found in part 1 [1].

1 Scope
The present document together with EN 301 843-1 [1], covers the assessment of MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters
and receivers for the maritime mobile service, and ancillary equipment in respect of ElectroMagnetic Compatibility
(EMC).
Technical specifications related to the antenna port and emissions from the enclosure port of marine radiotelephone
transmitters and receivers are not included in the present document. Such technical specifications are found in the
related product standards for the effective use of the radio spectrum.
The present document specifies the applicable test conditions, performance assessment, and performance criteria for
radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for the maritime mobile service and the associated ancillary equipment.
Examples of types of MF/HF radiotelephone transmitters and receivers for the maritime mobile service covered by the
present document are given in annex A.
In case of differences (for instance concerning special conditions, definitions, abbreviations) between the present
document and EN 301 843-1 [1], the provisions of the present document take precedence.
The electromagnetic environment used in the present document to develop the technical specifications encompasses the
electromagnetic environment onboard ships as identified in EN 60945 [5].
