Overview

SIST EN ISO 3262-18:2023 provides internationally harmonized specifications and standardized test methods for precipitated sodium aluminium silicate, an important industrial extender. As Part 18 of the ISO 3262 series, this standard ensures quality consistency in raw materials used as extenders across various sectors, primarily in paints, coatings, plastics, and other composite materials. Developed by the international technical committees for pigments and extenders, the document describes both the necessary requirements for product quality and the accepted methods for sampling and laboratory analysis.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Coverage
    • Specifies the minimum quality standards for precipitated sodium aluminium silicate.
    • Defines test methods for verifying compliance with these standards.
  • Essential Product Requirements
    • Includes key characteristics such as silica content, aluminium oxide and sodium oxide content, pH value, oil absorption, particle size, and residue on sieve.
  • Test Methods
    • Outlines precise analytical methods including gravimetric analysis, spectrometry (such as FAAS and ICP-AES), and standardized procedures for determining physical and chemical properties.
  • Terminology
    • Incorporates up-to-date definitions and references core terminology from ISO 18451-1 for consistency.
  • Sampling Procedures
    • Provides detailed guidance on correct sampling to ensure representative test results.

Applications

Precipitated sodium aluminium silicate finds extensive application as a functional filler or extender due to its performance and cost benefits. Following SIST EN ISO 3262-18:2023 helps industries and suppliers in several ways:

  • Paints and Coatings
    • Used to improve coverage, regulate sheen, and enhance physical properties in architectural and industrial paints.
  • Plastics and Polymers
    • Functions as a reinforcing filler for improved strength and stability in thermoplastics and thermosets.
  • Rubber Compounding
    • Incorporated as a performance additive in rubber products, often alongside silica-based reinforcing agents.
  • Ink and Paper
    • Provides control over viscosity and opacity in specialty printing inks and paper formulations.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Regular application of the standard’s test methods ensures ongoing product quality and facilitates international trade.
  • Research and Development
    • Enables R&D teams to benchmark and improve extender formulations for new products.

Related Standards

For comprehensive quality management and technical evaluation of pigments, fillers, and extenders, the following standards are closely associated with SIST EN ISO 3262-18:2023:

  • ISO 3262-1: Extenders - Specifications and methods of test - Part 1: Introduction and general test methods
  • ISO 787 Series: General methods of test for pigments and extenders (covers testing for volatility, oil absorption, and pH)
  • ISO 18451-1: Terminology for pigments, dyestuffs and extenders
  • ISO 3696: Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods
  • ISO 15528: Sampling of paints, varnishes, and raw materials
  • ISO 5794-1:2022: Rubber compounding ingredients - Silica, precipitated, hydrated - Non-rubber tests

Practical Value

Implementing SIST EN ISO 3262-18:2023 delivers several practical benefits:

  • Consistency and Reliability: Ensures that precipitated sodium aluminium silicate meets consistent quality benchmarks worldwide.
  • Efficiency in Sourcing: Facilitates procurement of materials with predictable performance characteristics.
  • Market Access: Simplifies compliance for manufacturers supplying products across international markets.
  • Customer Assurance: Provides end-users with confidence in the technical quality and suitability of supplied extenders.

For manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users of precipitated sodium aluminium silicate, following the guidelines and methods of test as established in this standard is essential for maintaining product quality, meeting customer specifications, and ensuring regulatory compliance in key industrial applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use
of (a) patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed
patent rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received
notice of (a) patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are
cautioned that this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent
database available at www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all
such patent rights.

expressions related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to
the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 256, Pigments, dyestuffs and extenders, in
collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC
298, Pigments and extenders, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO
and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 3262-18:2000), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— the first part of the title has been changed to “Extenders”;
— the normative references have been updated.
A list of all parts in the ISO 3262 series can be found on the ISO website.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A
