SIST EN IEC 62271-201:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of EN IEC 62271-201:2026, based on IEC 62271-201:2026. It specifies requirements for prefabricated alternating current (AC) solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear assemblies for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV, intended for indoor use in areas limited to authorized personnel. Engineers, manufacturers, test laboratories, buyers, and quality managers use it to define ratings, enclosure and earthing design, internal arc performance, and the verification tests that support acceptance.

What does SIST EN IEC 62271-201:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 62271-201:2026 covers prefabricated solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear assemblies for AC systems, service frequencies up to 60 Hz, indoor installation, and access limited to authorized personnel. The document also says the assembly can include air-insulated or fluid-filled compartments, or both, and that it supplements or in some cases replaces the requirements of the individual product standards for components installed inside the assembly.

The standard is organized into Clauses 1 to 13 and Annexes A to H. The annexes include mandatory test methods and procedures, plus informative guidance for selection, protection categories, symbols, and regional deviations.

AnnexWhat it covers
AInternal arc fault test method for verifying internal arc classification (IAC)
BPartial discharge measurement
CRegional deviations
DHumidity test
EProtection categories PA and PB
FList of symbols and abbreviations
GNormative flowchart for categorising LSC for a functional unit with a connection compartment
HPressure coordination chart for gas-filled compartments

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 62271-201:2026?

SIST EN IEC 62271-201:2026 uses Clause 4 for service conditions, Clause 5 for ratings, Clause 6 for design and construction, Clause 7 for type tests, and Clause 8 for routine tests. Clauses 9 to 13 then guide selection, enquiries and orders, transport and maintenance, safety, and environmental aspects. In practice, the document tells the user what the assembly must be rated for, how it must be built, and how the manufacturer must prove it.

Service conditions and ratings

Clause 4 states that the assembly is designed for normal indoor service conditions unless otherwise specified. For harsher condensation and pollution conditions, the assembly can be classified as class 1 or class 2 according to IEC TS 62271-304:2019. That matters because the purchaser must match the assembly to the real environment, not just the nominal voltage.

Clause 5 adds ratings beyond the usual voltage, frequency, current, and withstand values. It includes ratings for earthing circuits, cable test voltages, and internal arc classification (IAC), so the user can specify the electrical duty and the fault-duty level in one document. Clause 5.103 also requires the IAC rating to identify accessibility type, classified sides, arc fault current, and arc fault duration.

Design, enclosure, earthing, and access

Clause 6 requires earthing of conductive parts, enclosures, withdrawable and removable parts, and the earthing circuit itself. This is practical because the assembly must stay safe during service, maintenance, and fault conditions.

Clause 6.10 requires pressure or level indication for gas-filled compartments when the minimum functional pressure is above 200 kPa absolute at 20 °C, and it requires an alarm level for closed pressure systems above that threshold. Clause 6.11 requires durable nameplates with the assembly identification and the important rated values, including LSC and IAC where applicable, so the user can verify the equipment on site.

Clause 6.12 and Clause 6.13 cover locking devices and position indication. Interlocks must prevent unsafe operations, such as withdrawing or closing devices in the wrong position, and the operating position of disconnecting and earthing devices must be clear. Clause 6.101 adds practical safety expectations for normal use, including voltage detection, cable earthing, cable fault location, voltage tests on connected cables, and discharge of trapped electrostatic charges.

Clause 6.102 and Clause 6.103 define the solid insulating enclosure and the high-voltage compartments. Clause 6.104 requires a reference list when removable parts such as fuse-links can be exchanged, and it sets conditions for interchangeability and for keeping internal-arc protection effective when withdrawable parts are moved. Clause 6.105 allows assemblies to be designed for cable testing while the cables remain connected, and Clause 6.106 links IAC to the protection of persons during an internal arc.

Type tests and routine tests

Clause 7 validates the design with dielectric tests, partial discharge tests, resistance measurements, continuous current tests, short-time and peak withstand tests, protection verification, tightness tests, EMC tests, X-radiation tests for vacuum interrupters, making and breaking tests, mechanical operation tests, pressure withstand tests, internal arc tests, thermal stability tests, and humidity tests. For a buyer or certifier, this is the evidence package that shows the design performs as claimed.

Clause 7.105 and Annex A define the internal arc test method used to verify IAC. Clause 7.106 gives a thermal stability test for assemblies where solid insulation is the major insulation medium, and Clause 7.107 plus Annex D cover the humidity test where the enclosure surface needs verification under condensation and light pollution.

Clause 8 sets the routine tests on production units. These include dielectric testing of the main circuit, checks on auxiliary and control circuits, resistance measurement, tightness tests, design and visual checks, partial discharge measurement, mechanical operation tests, gas pressure tests if applicable, tests after erection on site, and fluid condition checks after filling on site. In practice, these are the checks that support factory release and, when needed, site acceptance.

Selection, information, and safety

Clauses 9 and 10 help the buyer and manufacturer agree the specification. Clause 9 covers selection of rated values, cable interface considerations, environmental aspects, LSC choices, and internal arc considerations, while Clause 10 lists the information to exchange with enquiries, tenders, and orders. That helps prevent gaps between the system requirement and the delivered assembly.

Clauses 11 and 12 cover transport, storage, installation, operating instructions, maintenance, and safety. They require the manufacturer to define compartment types, LSC category, procedures for accessible compartments, and maintenance directions, while the user must apply safe installation and operating procedures, especially for IAC-classified assemblies and procedure-based accessible compartments.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 62271-201:2026 define?

  • Solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear assembly - An assembly with an external solid insulating enclosure that is completely assembled except for external connections.
  • Functional unit - A part of an assembly that combines main circuits, earthing circuit, and auxiliary circuits to perform one function.
  • Loss of service continuity category (LSC) - A category that shows whether other compartments or functional units can remain energized when one compartment is opened.
  • Internal arc classification (IAC) - A classification that states the level of protection for persons in the event of an internal arc.
  • Solid insulating enclosure - The enclosure part that provides protection against external influences and against electric shock by limiting access to live parts.
  • Protection category PA - A protection arrangement for the solid insulating enclosure defined in Annex E.
  • Protection categories PB1 and PB2 - Higher protection arrangements defined in Annex E, with PB2 using a conductive layer arrangement that is tested for resistance.
