Overview
EN 1420:2016 (CEN) specifies a standardized procedure for obtaining migration water and assessing odour and flavour of water after contact with organic materials used in piping systems. It applies to factory-made and site-applied products - including pipes, fittings, ancillaries and coatings - that come into contact with water intended for human consumption and raw water used to produce drinking water.
This standard defines migration test conditions (cold and elevated temperature), requirements for test waters (chlorinated and unchlorinated), pretreatment (flushing, stagnation, prewashing) and sensory evaluation by a qualified panel to determine Threshold Odour Number (TON) and Threshold Flavour Number (TFN).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Products made from organic materials used in transport, storage and distribution of drinking water.
- Migration procedure:
- Cold water test: typically 72 h at (23 ± 2) °C (with chlorinated and/or unchlorinated test water as required).
- Elevated temperature tests: 24 h at 60 °C or 85 °C for warm/hot water simulation (an additional cold water test is required when elevated tests are used).
- Test waters and reagents:
- Test water must be free of perceptible odour/flavour and conform to the reference water in EN 1622.
- Chlorinated test water: (1 ± 0.2) mg/l free chlorine (as Cl2), prepared from sodium hypochlorite. Dechlorination agents (e.g., sodium thiosulfate, ascorbic acid) are specified for analysis steps.
- Pretreatment: Defined flushing, stagnation and prewashing procedures; surface-area-to-volume (S/V) ratios for pipes, fittings and site-applied products are specified.
- Sensory evaluation:
- Determination of TON/TFN follows EN 1622 methods.
- Panel qualification procedure and dilution series guidance are included (Annexes C and D).
- Documentation: Detailed requirements for test reports (product info, test conditions, results) are provided.
Applications and Users
EN 1420:2016 is used by:
- Manufacturers of pipes, fittings, seals, coatings and other plumbing products for product development and compliance.
- Independent testing laboratories performing migration and sensory testing.
- Water utilities and public health authorities assessing material suitability for drinking water systems.
- Certification bodies and standards organizations for product approval and regulatory compliance.
- Engineers and specifiers selecting materials for distribution and storage systems handling drinking water.
Benefits include reproducible odour/flavour assessment, harmonized test conditions across Europe, and support for regulatory conformity and product safety claims.
