SIST ISO 9116:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of ISO 9116:2025 from SIST, titled Green coffee - Guidance on methods of specification. It gives guidance on how to describe green coffee for sale and purchase, and on related sampling, packing, marking, storage and shipping practices used by traders, buyers, and handlers of green coffee.
What does SIST ISO 9116:2026 specify?
SIST ISO 9116:2026 specifies guidance for describing green coffee as a lot or consignment, and it applies to green coffee as defined in ISO 3509. It also gives guidance on how green coffee should be sampled, packed, marked, stored and shipped.
The document is organized into six clauses plus a bibliography:
- Clause 1 states the scope.
- Clause 2 lists the normative references.
- Clause 3 points to the applicable terms and definitions.
- Clause 4 gives the information used to describe a lot or consignment of green coffee.
- Clause 5 covers sampling.
- Clause 6 covers packing, marking, storage and shipping.
What are the key requirements of SIST ISO 9116:2026?
SIST ISO 9116:2026 is a guidance document, so its core content is about what information to provide and which related standards to follow. In practice, it helps sellers, buyers and laboratories describe green coffee in a consistent way and keep the product identifiable through handling and transport.
Clause 4 - describing a lot or consignment
Clause 4 says that all or part of several items should be provided for each lot or consignment, including origin, harvest year or age, type of green coffee, and the number of bags or net mass. It also points to measurement methods for quality-related descriptors. In practice, this is the checklist used when a shipment is offered, bought, inspected or documented.
The clause links these items to specific methods:
- loss in mass on drying, in accordance with ISO 6673
- moisture meter calibration, in accordance with ISO 24115
- total defects and foreign matter, in accordance with ISO 4149
- insect-damaged beans, in accordance with ISO 6667
- bulk density, in accordance with ISO 6669
- bean size, in accordance with ISO 4150
These links matter because they tell the reader which supporting method to use when the description includes a measured property.
Clause 5 - sampling
Clause 5 says that sampling for green coffee in bags should be carried out in accordance with ISO 4072. This matters because the sample has to represent the bagged coffee being assessed, not just one bag or one point in the shipment.
Clause 6.1 - packing
Clause 6.1 says green coffee should be packed in suitable materials that do not affect the product, or placed in bulk containers that protect it from damage, deterioration and contamination. In practice, this is about choosing packaging that preserves condition and prevents taint or physical damage.
Clause 6.2 - marking
Clause 6.2 says bags and bulk containers should be marked legibly, and bags should be indelibly marked. The marking should show at least the product name “green coffee”, country of origin, region, state or plantation of origin if applicable, harvest year or age if applicable, and net mass. This supports identification, traceability and receipt checks.
Clause 6.3 - storage and shipping
Clause 6.3 says green coffee should be stored, handled and transported in accordance with ISO 8455. This matters because storage and transport conditions affect quality before roasting and before trade acceptance.
What terms does SIST ISO 9116:2026 define?
SIST ISO 9116:2026 uses the terms and definitions from ISO 3509 and ISO 18794. The document itself relies on those vocabularies rather than restating the definitions.
- Green coffee - the product covered by this document and defined in ISO 3509.
- Lot - the quantity of green coffee being described or traded.
- Consignment - the shipment or delivered quantity of green coffee.
- Bulk containers - containers used instead of bags when packing green coffee in bulk.
- Sensory analysis - the coffee vocabulary source given in ISO 18794.
- Defects and foreign matter - the quality description linked in Clause 4 to ISO 4149.
Who uses SIST ISO 9116:2026?
SIST ISO 9116:2026 is used by coffee traders, exporters, importers, buyers, sellers, warehouse operators and quality-control laboratories. It supports trade descriptions, sampling, product marking, and the storage and shipping steps that keep green coffee identifiable and suitable for transaction.
What changed in SIST ISO 9116:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST ISO 9116:2026 replaces SIST ISO 9116:2011. The ISO third edition cancels and replaces ISO 9116:2004 and states that it was technically revised.
The changes stated in the document are:
- updated normative references
- updated marking
- removal of Annex A
Which standards are used with SIST ISO 9116:2026?
| Standard | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| ISO 3509 | Vocabulary for coffee and coffee products; it defines green coffee for this document. |
| ISO 18794 | Vocabulary for sensory analysis used in coffee. |
| ISO 4072 | Sampling of green coffee in bags. |
| ISO 4149 | Olfactory and visual examination and determination of foreign matter and defects. |
| ISO 4150 | Size analysis of green coffee or raw coffee. |
| ISO 6667 | Determination of the proportion of insect-damaged beans. |
| ISO 6669 | Determination of free-flow bulk density of whole beans. |
| ISO 6673 | Determination of loss in mass at 105 °C. |
| ISO 8455 | Guidance on storage and transport of green coffee. |
| ISO 24115 | Calibration of moisture meters. |
What does the SIST ISO 9116:2026 document contain?
SIST ISO 9116:2026 contains a practical framework for describing green coffee and handling it through trade. Clause 4 gives the information items used to identify and characterize a lot or consignment, while Clauses 5 and 6 point to sampling, packing, marking, storage and shipping practices.
The bibliography collects the linked test and handling standards used alongside the document. Together, these references show where to find the methods for sampling, defect assessment, bean size, bulk density, moisture-meter calibration and transport guidance.
