Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 10693 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOnC 190, Seil quality, Subcommittee SC 3, Chemical methods and seil
characteris tics.
Annexes A and B of this International Standard are for information only.

2 Other gases that are produced [e.g. hydrogen sulfide
(H2S) in samples of anaerobic soil containing sulfides] may
result in an overestimate of the carbonate content. In these
cases the gas produced should be purified and its volume
measured in another way (see [l] in annex A). When sul-
fides are known to be present in the soil samples,
mercury(ll) chloride (HgCI,) is added to the hydrochloric acid
Solution to form insoluble mercury(ll) sulfide (HgS).
