General Information
Overview
EN 15456:2008 (CEN) defines how to measure and report the electrical power consumption of heating boilers and associated burners. It sets the system boundaries, required definitions, measurement modes and procedures to determine auxiliary electrical energy (Paux) and, where relevant, the water‑side resistance used in heat generator testing. The standard applies to boilers sold with or without burners (including forced‑draught and pellet burners) and to burners equipped with fans as required for normal boiler operation.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to oil‑ and gas‑fired forced‑draught burners, pellet burners, flued oil stoves and heating boilers (including condensing and room‑sealed types) as listed in the standard.
- System boundaries: Measurement boundary starts at the manual shut‑off devices for water/fuel and ends at the flue outlet. Components required for designed operation (fuel valves, fuel pump, oil pre‑heater, combustion air fan, control units, integrated circulator/pump) are included in measurements.
- Measurement modes:
- Full load (100%), part load (30%) and stand‑by operation are mandatory measurement points.
- Tests are performed in heating mode only; hot‑water mode is also relevant when applicable.
- Temperature spread for tests: 20 ± 2 K between flow and return at nominal heat input.
- Water‑side resistance: Determination of pressure loss across the boiler (flow to return) at nominal conditions is required; procedures reference EN 304 and an informative Annex B for alternative determination.
- Reporting: Test report and documentation format are specified (including Annex A normative test report content).
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN 15456:2008:
- Boiler and burner manufacturers - to quantify and declare auxiliary electrical consumption and to design compliant products.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - for type testing and issuing performance data.
- HVAC engineers and system designers - to size pumps/fans and to assess auxiliary energy impacts on system efficiency.
- Energy modellers and standards writers - to provide input data for system energy calculations (notably for prEN 15316‑4‑1 referenced in the standard).
- Regulators and procurement teams - when specifying or comparing products on overall energy performance including electric auxiliaries.
Practical benefits:
- Ensures consistent, repeatable measurement of auxiliary electricity across product types.
- Enables accurate calculation of total auxiliary energy for building‑level energy assessments.
- Clarifies what components must be included in measurements, avoiding inconsistent test scopes.
