Overview

The SIST EN IEC 60879:2019/A1:2025 standard, issued by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), specifies updated methods for measuring the performance of comfort fans and regulators designed for household and similar applications. This amendment (A1) revises the previous EN IEC 60879:2019 standard to enhance the accuracy and consistency of performance testing procedures for various fan types, including conventional, bladeless, pedestal, table, and tower fans. The latest version was approved in April 2025 and mandates compliance by May 2026.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Terminology Updates
Clarification and refinement of key terms such as conventional fans, bladeless fans, table fans, pedestal fans, and new classifications like desktop type and floor type bladeless fans. Notably, definitions now emphasize the structure and air flow characteristics, including concealed impellers in bladeless fans.

  • Test Chamber Specifications
The amendment revises the size and conditions of the test chambers utilized for airflow measurement. Chambers must be free from extraneous drafts and meet specific dimensions based on fan sweep size and type (e.g., 4,500 mm or 6,000 mm in length).

  • Air Velocity Measurement Procedures
Detailed protocols for measuring air velocity at multiple points relative to the fan blade or air outlet, including origin points and radial distances. Incremental measurements in four directions ensure thorough velocity profiling, with specified minimum velocity thresholds for valid measurement.

  • Calculation of Airflow Rates
Introduces formulas for calculating total air delivery based on measured velocities over defined circular areas around fan axes, with specific criteria for recognizing valid airflow contributions (e.g., ignoring flows below threshold velocity).

  • Performance Testing for Bladeless and Conventional Fans
Procedures to ensure accurate testing of different fan types include specific distances from floor and walls, positioning of anemometers, and measurement matrices that accommodate fan design differences.

  • Regulation Ratio Measurement
For fan speed regulators, especially bladeless types, the standard defines the method to assess air velocity reduction capability by comparing maximum and minimum speed settings under controlled conditions.

  • Standardization and Patent Notice
Highlights the possibility of patent rights related to the methods and acknowledges IEC’s role in promoting uniform international standards without providing conformity certifications themselves.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 60879:2019/A1:2025 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and regulatory authorities involved in the design, testing, and approval of comfort fans and associated regulators for residential and similar consumer environments. The standard supports:

  • Product Development
Facilitates precise performance assessment during fan design to ensure efficiency, airflow quality, and noise levels meet consumer expectations and regulatory requirements.

  • Quality Assurance
Enables manufacturers and independent testers to benchmark fan performance consistently, ensuring reliability and compliance with international norms.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Assists market surveillance bodies in verifying that fan products conform to updated European and international test methods for airflow and speed regulation.

  • Consumer Safety and Satisfaction
Guarantees that measured performance results reflect real operational conditions, promoting products optimized for comfort, energy efficiency, and safe use.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60704-2-7
Specifies methods for measuring fan sound power levels, referenced for sound measurement compliance within EN IEC 60879 procedures.

  • IEC 60879:2019
The base international standard on methods for measuring performance of comfort fans and regulators, of which SIST EN IEC 60879:2019/A1:2025 is an amendment.

  • ISO/IEC Directives Part 1 and Part 2
Provide procedural frameworks for drafting and publishing international electrotechnical standards adopted by IEC committees.

  • Other IEC Standards on Household Appliances
Such as IEC technical committee 59 publications addressing performance and safety requirements of household electrical appliances.

By adhering to SIST EN IEC 60879:2019/A1:2025, stakeholders benefit from harmonized, transparent, and reliable testing methodologies that improve product performance verification and foster consumer confidence in household comfort fans and regulators.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document.
