kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 is the SIST publication of the IEC test code for measuring airborne acoustical noise from household and similar electrical fans. It supplements IEC 60704-1:2021 and tells laboratories how to test fan noise in a way that supports comparison between products and between test houses. It is aimed at manufacturers, test labs, quality teams and buyers who need a common method for declared or verified fan noise values.

What does kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 specifies particular requirements for the airborne acoustical noise test code for fans used in household and similar applications. It applies to fans for AC or DC supply and covers comfort fans, table fans, pedestal fans, ceiling fans, wall bracket fans, ceiling bracket fans, louvre fans, tower fans, handheld fans, neckband fans, embedded fans and ventilating fans.

It excludes fans that are part of a central ventilation system, fans built into another appliance, and fans with extra functions such as heating or humidifying. That distinction matters because the test setup is written for stand-alone fan noise, not for systems or combined appliances.

The document is organized as a Part 2 standard that supplements IEC 60704-1:2021. It includes clauses on scope, terms, measurement methods, instrumentation, operation and location, sound pressure level measurement, recorded information and reported information, plus Annex B.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex B (normative)Test enclosure

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026?

The main requirements in kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 define how to set up the test, how to mount the fan and how to record the result so that different laboratories can compare outcomes.

Measurement method and uncertainty

  • Clause 4 allows the direct method and comparison method, and points to ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2 and ISO 3744 as usable measurement methods and acoustical environments. If a fan produces audible discrete tones, more microphone positions or source positions may be needed. In practice, that helps avoid underestimating a tonal fan.
  • Clause 4.5.2 gives standard deviations for repeatability, reproducibility, and for declaration and verification. In practice, these values are used when comparing lab results or when declaring a noise emission value under IEC 60704-3.

Instrumentation and preparation

  • Clause 5.1 makes a windscreen mandatory and requires correction for changes in microphone sensitivity. This matters because airflow from the fan can affect the microphone reading.
  • Clause 6.1.3 requires the appliance to run for at least 10 minutes before noise measurements. In practice, the fan should be stabilized before the reading starts.

Operating condition and mounting

  • Clause 6.4.2 says to measure noise in normal operation at maximum speed, with other speeds allowed too. Fans that tilt should be tested in the position with the highest emitted noise level, and oscillating fans should oscillate during the test. This makes the result relevant to real use.
  • Clause 6.5 gives type-specific mounting rules. Ceiling bracket fans and ventilating fans are hung from a special support, with at least 1.5 m between the lowest edge and the reflecting plane, and ventilating fans are tested without extra ducts beyond those built into the appliance. Neckband fans are fixed at their centre by a single rubber band, and wall bracket fans also keep at least 1.5 m from the reflecting plane.

Sound pressure level measurement

  • Clause 7 sets the measurement surface by fan type. Most fans use the standard surface, handheld fans and neckband fans use a different one, and wall bracket fans use a hemisphere with 10 microphone positions and a 1 m radius. That means the microphone layout depends on the fan design.
  • Clause 7.4.1 requires averaging the A-weighted sound pressure level for at least 30 seconds, or for at least three complete cycles for oscillating appliances. This reduces short-term variation and gives a more representative result.

What terms does kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 define?

  • Comfort fan - A fan mainly intended to move air around or onto part of the human body for personal cooling comfort, including models that also provide lighting.
  • Wall bracket fan - A comfort fan intended to be mounted on a wall.
  • Ceiling bracket fan - A comfort fan intended to be mounted on a ceiling; in this document, ceiling fans and embedded fans are treated as a kind of ceiling bracket fan.
  • Handheld fan - A portable comfort fan held by hand, with a fan wheel diameter not larger than 150 mm.
  • Neckband fan - A portable comfort fan designed to be worn around the neck.
  • Ventilating fan - A fan intended to move air across a partition or within a duct, with the fan inlet and/or outlet installed in the air path.

Who uses kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026?

Manufacturers and design engineers use kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 to choose the right test arrangement for a fan design and to compare noise levels across variants. Test laboratories use it to set up microphones, mounting and operating conditions for reproducible results.

Quality managers, certification bodies and buyers use it when a fan noise value must be declared, checked or compared with another product. It is especially relevant for household appliance work involving comfort fans, ventilating fans and related fan types.

What changed in kSIST FprEN IEC 60704-2-7:2026 from the previous edition?

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2020. It is described as a technical revision.

The stated significant changes are:

  • alignment with IEC 60704-1:2021
  • expanded scope for handheld, neckband and embedded fans
  • reworked positioning and mounting
  • changed test concept for partition ventilating fans so inlet and outlet sides are measured together
