Thermal insulation products for buildings - Factory made calcium silicate (CS) products - Specification

This draft European Standard specifies the requirements for factory made calcium silicate products with or without lamination or coating which are used for the thermal insulation of buildings.
Calcium silicate products have also the capability to regulate air moisture in building rooms, which means to absorb moisture from the air and opposite to give the moisture back to the room due to the capillarity of the product.
Calcium silicate insulation material comprising hydrated calcium silicate, normally reinforced by incorporated fibres. The main crystal phases are Xonotlite, Tobermorite with or without Wollastonite.
The products are manufactured in the form of boards, segments and prefabricated ware.
This draft European Standard describes product characteristics and includes procedures for testing, evaluation of conformity, marking and labelling.
This draft European Standard does not specify the required level or class of a given property that shall be achieved by a product to demonstrate fitness for purpose in a particular application. The levels required for a given application can be found in regulations and invitations to tender.
This draft European Standard is not valid for products with declared thermal resistance lower than 0,13 m2 K/W or a declared thermal conductivity greater than 0,075 W/(mK) at 10 °C.
This draft European Standard does not cover aerated concrete, autoclaved aerated concrete, mineral foam insulating products and sand-lime bricks as well as in situ insulation products and products intended to be used for the insulation of the building equipment and industrial installations.

5.1.2 Conditioning

No special conditioning of the test specimens is needed unless otherwise specified in the test standard.

When cut from boards test specimens shall be stored in an atmosphere of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) %

relative humidity until stabilization at constant weight is achieved. Stabilization is obtained when the

relative change in weight does not exceed 0,5 % between two consecutive weekly measurements. In

case of dispute, the following stepwise procedure shall be carried out:

— Step 1 (dry reference): The specimens are stored for 72 h at (70 ± 2) °C, in an oven ventilated

with an air taken at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity, and
then weighed. The mass of the test specimen at Step 1 is m .
dry

— Step 2 (normal reference): After conditioning according to step 1, the specimens are stored in an

atmosphere of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity until
stabilization, and then weighed. Stabilization, by definition, takes at
least six weeks with some additional time so that the relative change in
moisture does not increase by more than 5 % between two consecutive
weekly measurements. The mass of the test specimen at Step 2 is
m . Moisture content, u , expressed in kilogram per kilogram,
23,50 23,50

with EN 13820:2003 that the products do not contain more than 1,0 % by weight or volume (whichever

is the more onerous) of homogeneously distributed organic material.

NOTE The Commission Decision 96/603/EC of 4 October 1996, amended by the Commission Decisions

2000/605/EC of 26 September 2000 and 2003/424/EC of 6 June 2003, gives the list of materials, and products

made with them, considered as reaction to fire class A1 without the need for testing.

5.2.2 Release of VOCs

The release of VOCs into indoor air shall be tested according to EN 16516:2017+A1:2020.

5.2.3 Rate of release of corrosive substances

The rate of release of corrosive substances (trace quantities of water-soluble ions and pH-value) shall

be tested according to EN 13468:2001.
5.2.4 Compressive strength

Compressive stress at 10 % deformation, σ , or the compressive strength, σ , shall be determined in

10 m
accordance with EN 826:2013.

5.2.5 Bending strength
Bending strength shall be determined in accordance with EN 12089:2013, Method B.
5.2.6 Thermal resistance
5.2.6.1 General

For the determination of the thermal resistance the following characteristics are needed:

— Thermal conductivity (5.2.6.2)
— Length, width and thickness (5.2.6.3)
— Squareness (5.2.6.4)
— Flatness (5.2.6.5)
5.2.6.2 Thermal conductivity

Thermal conductivity shall be based upon measurements carried out in accordance with

EN 12667:2001 or EN 12939:2000 for thick products and in accordance with 5.2 and Annex D.

For multi-layer products additional assessment conditions are given in Annex C.

The thermal conductivity shall be determined in accordance with Annex A, and declared by the

manufacturer according to the following:
— the reference mean temperature shall be (10 ± 0,30) °C;

— thermal resistance and thermal conductivity may also be measured at mean temperatures other

than 10 °C, providing that the accuracy of the relationship between temperature and thermal

properties is well documented.
— after conditioning in accordance with 5.2.

— the declared values are to be given for a moisture content equal to that of the material when it has

reached the equilibrium with the air at 23 °C and relative humidity of 50 %, see Annex D;

— the measured values shall be expressed with three significant figures;

— for products of uniform thickness, the declared thermal resistance, R , shall always be declared.

The thermal conductivity, λ , shall be declared where possible. Where appropriate, for products of

non-uniform thickness (e.g. for sloped and tapered products) only the thermal conductivity, λ ,

shall be declared;

— thermal resistance and thermal conductivity shall be determined directly at measured thickness. In

the event that this is not possible, they shall be determined by measurements on other thicknesses

of the product providing that:

— the product is of similar chemical and physical characteristics and is produced on the same

production unit;

— and it can be demonstrated in accordance with EN 12939:2000 that the thermal conductivity, λ,

does not vary more than 2 % over the range of thicknesses where the calculation is applied;
