Overview

EN 13880-5:2024 is the CEN test method for determining the flow resistance of hot-applied joint sealants. Approved by CEN in January 2024, this part of the EN 13880 series characterizes the stability of sealants at elevated temperature and replaces EN 13880-5:2004. The procedure quantifies the movement of a specimen's lower transverse edge after exposure to a controlled high-temperature condition.

Key Topics

  • Scope and purpose: Measures resistance to flow (movement) of a rectangular plate-shaped sealant specimen under elevated temperature to assess stability.
  • Principle: A representative sealant portion is formed into a rectangular specimen on a metal sample carrier. The specimen is sloped in a test stand and held at the test temperature for the test duration; flow of the lower transverse edge is measured.
  • Apparatus: Includes a forced-air ventilated laboratory oven (ISO 188 compatible), a metal grouting frame and roughened metal plate sample carrier, and a sloping test stand to set the specimen axis at (75 ± 2)° to the horizontal.
  • Specimen dimensions and preparation: The grouted specimen dimensions are L (60 ± 1) mm × W (40 ± 1) mm × thickness (3,2 ± 0,05) mm, prepared using EN 13880-6 and EN 12594 guidance. A release agent is applied to the frame; excess material is trimmed after cooling.
  • Test conditions: Temperature (60,0 ± 1) °C for a duration of 300 ± 3 min (5 hours). The plate is preheated in the oven and then conditioned at slope in the oven for the specified period.
  • Results and reporting: Flow resistance is reported as the average of two determinations, rounded to the nearest 1 mm. The test report shall include product identification, batch details, sample preparation and conditioning, individual values, test result, date, and laboratory/analyst identification.
  • Precision: Repeatability and reproducibility estimates are not yet available and will be included by amendment when known.

Applications

  • Quality control and batch verification of hot-applied joint sealants.
  • Specification and compliance checks for road construction and sealing materials.
  • Comparative performance assessment during product development or reformulation.
  • Part of a combined test regime (density, penetration, heat resistance, adhesion) for comprehensive sealant evaluation.

Related Standards

  • EN 13880 series (Parts 1–13) - companion test methods for hot-applied joint sealants.
  • EN 13880-6 - sample preparation for testing.
  • EN 12594 - preparation of test samples for bitumen and bituminous binders.
  • ISO 188 - accelerated ageing and heat resistance tests (oven requirements).
  • EN 14188-1 - joint fillers and sealants specification (referenced in bibliography).

This standard is essential for laboratories, manufacturers and specifiers working with hot-applied sealants where thermal stability and flow resistance are critical performance criteria.
