Overview

SIST EN 915:2025 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements and test methods for asymmetric bars used in gymnastics. This standard focuses on both functional and safety aspects, building on the general safety guidelines outlined in EN 913:2018+A1:2021. It applies to two types of asymmetric bars intended for use under the supervision of a competent person, ensuring consistent quality and safety in gymnastic equipment design and manufacturing.

The latest revision, effective January 2025, replaces the previous EN 915:2008 standard and incorporates updated terminology, classifications, dimensional requirements, and comprehensive safety testing protocols. This standard is crucial for manufacturers, safety inspectors, and gymnastic facility operators aiming to comply with EU safety regulations and provide safe gymnastic equipment.

Key Topics

  • Classification and Dimensions
SIST EN 915:2025 classifies asymmetric bars into two types based on design and fixing points. It defines precise dimensional tolerances, such as a circular bar diameter of 40 ± 1 mm, and specifies adjustment ranges to align with Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) rules.

  • Safety Requirements
This standard outlines enhanced safety criteria beyond general gymnastic equipment standards, including:

    • Entrapment prevention around uprights and adjustment devices
    • Stability thresholds ensuring equipment does not tip easily under horizontal loads
    • Vertical stiffness and residual deflection limits for bar flexibility and resilience
    • Strength requirements to avoid fractures or ruptures under vertical loading
    • Rigidity of the framework to control bar deflections during use
  • Test Methods
SIST EN 915:2025 provides rigorous testing procedures to verify compliance with safety and functional requirements, such as:

    • Stability and rigidity testing using horizontal forces at specified points
    • Vertical stiffness testing with controlled loads and measurement of deflections
    • Strength testing to detect material failure under stress
    • Conditioning requirements and detailed apparatus descriptions to standardize testing environments
  • User Information and Marking
Manufacturers must provide comprehensive instructions covering setup, transportation, assembly, space requirements, maintenance, and safety warnings. Marking of equipment follows EN 913:2018+A1:2021, ensuring traceability and user awareness.

Applications

SIST EN 915:2025 applies to the design, manufacture, and certification of asymmetric bars used in competitive and recreational gymnastics facilities across Europe. Its practical applications include:

  • Gymnastics clubs and training centers ensuring their equipment meets safety standards
  • Manufacturers designing compliant asymmetric bars with consistent dimensions and strength
  • Safety inspectors conducting rigorous assessments of gymnastic apparatus
  • Event organizers requiring certified equipment for competitions
  • Facility managers aiming to maintain safe usage conditions with clear maintenance and inspection schedules

By adhering to SIST EN 915:2025, stakeholders can reduce injuries, improve equipment durability, and align with EU safety legislation on indoor sports equipment.

Related Standards

  • EN 913:2018+A1:2021 – General safety requirements and test methods for gymnastic equipment
  • EN 917 – Applicable for other types of gymnastic equipment standards
  • Directive 2001/95/EC – General Product Safety Directive referenced by SIST EN 915:2025 for regulatory compliance
  • FIG Rules – Provides additional technical specifications for gymnastics apparatus dimensions and use

Integrating SIST EN 915:2025 with these related standards ensures comprehensive safety management and conformity within the broader framework of European sports equipment regulation.
