1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for the determination of the Lovibond colour of animal and vegetable
fats and oils.
2 Normative reference
The following standard contains provision which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this

3 Principle
The colour of the light transmitted through a known path length of liquid fat or oil is matched with the colour of the
light originating from the same source transmitted through glass colour standards. The results are conventionally
expressed in Lovibond units.
4 Apparatus
Usual laboratory apparatus and, in particular, the following.
4.1 Colorimeter

The Lovibond Universal tintometers Model F (BS684) and Model F/C are suitable.
NOTE The older Models AF905 and AF900/C Model E tintometers are suitable but no longer available. The Lovibond
AF710, Lovibond Schofield, Wesson and AOCS colorimeters are NOT suitable.

4.2 Lighting cabinet
Any of the models given in 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 are suitable.
4.2.1 Models F (BS684) and Model F/C
The tintometer shall be maintained in a good, clean condition in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
The viewing tube shall contain a Skan Blue daylight correction filter and a diffusing lens, and shall have a field of
view subtending 2° at the eye. It shall be mounted in the cabinet such that the sample and the white reference field
are viewed at 60° to the normal.
4.2.2 Tintometer AF905/E, AF900/C and Model E
These are painted internally matt white and contain, behind ground glass diffusing screens, two 60 W pearl
(uncoated) lamps operated at the correct mains voltage and positioned one on either side of the viewing tube so
that each illuminates the white reflecting reference surface at an angle of 45°.
BOTH lamps shall be changed as soon as either envelope shows signs of discoloration and, in any event, after
100 h of use. A suitable logging system shall be used to register lamp usage.
The viewing tube shall contain a Skan Blue daylight correction filter and a diffusing lens and shall have a field of
view subtending 2° at the eye. It shall be mounted in the cabinet such that the sample and white reference field are
viewed at 90° to the normal. The lighting cabinet, diffusing screens and reflectance surfaces shall be kept free from
stains and regularly cleaned. The internal paintwork shall be inspected regularly for ageing/discoloration and shall be

repainted matt white when the surfaces become darker than Munsell Notation 5Y 9/1. The viewing tube shall be
maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
4.3 Colour racks
These shall be fitted with colourless compensating slides on the lower section and shall contain glass colour
standards (in Lovibond units) as follows:
Red 0,1 to 0,9 1,0 to 9,0 10,0 and 70,0
Yellow 0,1 to 0,9 1,0 to 9,0 10,0 to 70,0
Blue 0,1 to 0,9 1,0 to 9,0 10,0 to 40,0
Neutral 0,1 to 0,9 1,0 to 3,0
The colour standards shall be kept clean and free from oil and grease by wiping with cotton buds dipped in warm
water containing detergent and dried by wiping with cotton wool. Solvents shall not be used for cleaning.

La présente Norme internationale spécifie une méthode de détermination de la couleur Lovibond des corps gras
d'origines animale et végétale.

3 Principe
La couleur de la lumière transmise au travers d'une épaisseur connue de corps gras liquide est comparée à la
couleur de la lumière émise par la même source et transmise à travers des étalons chromatiques en verre. Les
résultats sont exprimés, par convention, en unités Lovibond.
4 Appareillage
Matériel courant de laboratoire et, en particulier, ce qui suit.
4.1 Colorimètre

Les comparateurs de teintes Lovibond Universal modèle F (BS684) et modèle F/C se sont révélés appropriés.
NOTE Les comparateurs de teintes Lovibond Universal AF905 modèle E et AF900/C modèle E de type ancien se sont
révélés appropriés mais ne sont plus disponibles. Les colorimètres Lovibond AF710, Lovibond Schofield, Wesson et AOCS
NE SONT PAS appropriés.

4.2 Caisson d’éclairage
Tous les modèles donnés en 4.2.1 et 4.2.2 conviennent.
4.2.1 Modèle F (BS684) et modèle F/C
Le comparateur de teintes doit être maintenu propre et en bon état, conformément aux instructions du fabricant. Le
tube d'observation doit renfermer un filtre de correction de la lumière du jour de type Skan Blue, ainsi qu'une lentille
de diffusion, et doit présenter un champ de vision sous-tendant un arc de 2° par rapport à l'œil. Le tube doit être
monté dans le caisson de telle sorte que l'échantillon et le champ blanc de référence soient visibles à 60° par
rapport à la normale.
4.2.2 Comparateur de teintes AF905/E, AF900/C et modèle E
L'intérieur est uniformément recouvert d'une peinture blanche mate. Il contient deux ampoules de 60 W dépolies
(sans revêtement), situées derrière les écrans en verre destinés à diffuser la lumière et alimentées par la tension
nominale appropriée, chacune étant placée de part et d'autre du tube d'observation, de sorte qu'elles éclairent
respectivement la surface réfléchissante de référence selon un angle de 45°.
LES DEUX lampes doivent être remplacées dès que l'une des enveloppes présente des signes de décoloration et,
dans tous les cas, après toute période d'utilisation de 100 h. L'utilisation d'un système d'enregistrement approprié
doit permettre de tenir un calendrier de l'utilisation des lampes.
Le tube d'observation doit renfermer un filtre de correction de la lumière du jour de type Skan Blue, ainsi qu'une
lentille de diffusion, et doit présenter un champ de vision sous-tendant un arc de 2° par rapport à l'œil. Le tube doit
être monté dans le caisson de telle sorte que l'échantillon et le champ blanc de référence soient visibles à 90° par
rapport à la normale.
Le caisson d'éclairage, les écrans de diffusion et les surfaces réfléchissantes doivent être maintenus exempts de
souillures et faire l'objet d'un nettoyage régulier. La peinture interne doit être vérifiée régulièrement en vue de
déceler le vieillissement/la décoloration et doit être renouvelée en blanc mat en cas de noircissement des surfaces

supérieur à la notation Munsell 5Y 9/1 . Le tube d'observation doit être entretenu conformément aux instructions du
fabricant.
4.3 Présentoirs de couleurs
Les présentoirs de couleurs doivent être équipés de lames en verre compensatrices incolores et contenant des
étalons chromatiques en verre, conformes aux valeurs suivantes (exprimées en unités Lovibond):
Rouge 0,1 à 0,9 1,0 à 9,0 10,0 et 70,0
Jaune 0,1 à 0,9 1,0 à 9,0 10,0 à 70,0
Bleu 0,1 à 0,9 1,0 à 9,0 10,0 à 40,0
Neutre 0,1 à 0,9 1,0 à 3,0
Les étalons chromatiques doivent être maintenus propres et exempts d'huile et de graisse en les essuyant à l'aide
de tampons de coton imbibés d'eau chaude contenant du détergent, puis séchés avec de la ouate. Aucun solvant
ne doit être utilisé pour le nettoyage.
NOTE Des étalons chromatiques en verre certifiés (disponibles auprès de The Tintometer Ltd.) peuvent être employés
pour vérifier le fonctionnement correct de l'appareillage.
4.4 Plateau de travail
Nécessaire uniquement pour le modèle de type E.

4.5 Cellules en verre
Les cellules en verre doivent être fabriquées à partir de verre de bonne qualité optique et présentant une finition
normalisée, ainsi que des longueurs de trajet optique conformes aux valeurs suivantes:
