Overview

EN 15388:2020 - Agglomerated stone - Slabs and cut-to-size products for vanity and kitchen tops (CEN) defines the requirements and test methods for agglomerated stone (commercially known as engineered-stone) slabs and cut-to-size products intended for vanity and kitchen tops and similar furnishing uses (e.g., splash zones). It supersedes EN 15388:2008 and applies to factory-produced slabs and panels; secondary operations and site installation are excluded.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and terminology: Defines product types (rough slab, slab, cut-to-size product) and refers to EN 14618 for terminology and classification.
  • Dimensions and tolerances: Manufacturers declare dimensions; standard sets typical tolerances (examples include thickness tolerance ≈ ±1.2 mm, squareness ≈ ±0.2%, flatness/curvature limits ≈ ±0.2%). Cut-to-size dimensions are referenced to templates or drawings.
  • Surface finish: Surface finishes must be uniform over at least 90% of the visible surface. Acceptable finishes include sandblasted, fine-ground, honed, highly polished and structured surfaces. Gloss levels for polished finishes should be declared by the manufacturer.
  • Backside and edge requirements: Unexposed backs must have a regular appearance; calibrated backs have a maximum roughness limit (≤ 0.5 mm). Edge tolerances are to be specified on drawings.
  • Declared product characteristics and tests: When required or contracted, the following properties shall be determined and declared using referenced EN test methods:
    • Reaction to fire (EN 13501-1)
    • Apparent density and water absorption (EN 14617‑1)
    • Flexural tensile (bending) strength (EN 14617‑2)
    • Thermal shock resistance (EN 14617‑6)
    • Impact resistance (EN 14617‑9)
    • Chemical resistance (EN 14617‑10)
    • Linear thermal expansion (EN 14617‑11)
  • Contact with food: For kitchen tops, occasional contact with food is anticipated; polished and washable surfaces do not promote bacterial growth if maintained. Anti-bacterial additives require laboratory testing.
  • Marking and labelling: Each consignment must identify classification per EN 14618, maximum grain size and declared surface finish.

Applications and users

Who uses EN 15388:2020:

  • Manufacturers of engineered-stone slabs and cut-to-size kitchen/vanity tops (product specification & quality control)
  • Fabricators and fabricating workshops (production tolerances, surface finish control)
  • Specifiers, architects, interior designers (material selection, performance requirements)
  • Suppliers and distributors (product labelling and documentation)
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors (type testing and factory production control)

Practical benefits: ensures consistent product quality, facilitates contractual specification, supports compliance with fire and hygiene requirements, and helps designers select suitable engineered-stone for kitchens and bathrooms.
