(Main)Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 701: Strippability and adherence of insulation to the conductor
- Abstract
This document specifies methods of measuring the strippability and adherence of the insulation to a conductor of a finished cable.
When a particular method is not specified in the detail product specification, method A is the default test method.
Method B is suitable for wires insulated with materials showing a low adhesion to the conductor due to the poor repeatability of the test method A with this type of wires.
This document is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100.

kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 is a draft European Standard in the aerospace series, prepared by ASD-STAN for CEN. It specifies test methods for measuring the strippability of insulation and the adherence of insulation to the conductor in electrical cables used in aircraft. In practice, it is the document you use when you need a repeatable way to check how easily insulation can be removed and how firmly it remains attached.
What does kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 specify?
kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 covers methods for testing a finished cable for insulation stripping and a wire for insulation adherence to the conductor. The document is organized into scope, normative references, terms and definitions, specimen preparation, methods, requirements, and a bibliography.
The scope gives two different uses:
- Method A is the default when the detail product specification does not name a method.
- Method B is intended for wires with low insulation adhesion, where method A has poor repeatability.
The standard is intended to be used together with EN 3475-100, which provides the general framework for this test-method series.
What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026?
kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 distinguishes between preparation of specimens, the test method, and the acceptance requirement. The practical point is that the test piece and the acceptance limit depend on whether you are checking stripping performance or insulation adhesion.
Specimen preparation
Clause 4 says measurements are taken from samples directly out of a reel or coil with minimum deformation. For insulation stripping properties, the specimen comes from the finished cable. For adherence of insulation to the conductor, the specimen comes from individual wire before integration in a finished cable.
That matters because the test is tied to the stage of manufacture. If you sample the wrong form of product, the result does not match the standard.
Stripping performance
For cables with sections up to 5 mm, stripping shall be possible over 5 mm at both ends of each specimen. For sections greater than 5 mm, the required length is 8 mm at both ends. The stripping tools shall conform to EN 2812, and the manufacturer shall state the tools used in the test report.
In practice, this means the lab must use defined tools and record them, so the result can be repeated and compared.
Adherence test methods
For adherence, the conductor is passed through a calibrated hole sized at conductor diameter plus 0.05 mm, then pulled with increasing tensile force until it slides inside the insulating cover. The tensile speed is 100 ± 10 mm/min for both methods.
Method B requires three measurements per sample. That is important for low-adhesion materials, where a single reading can be less stable.
Acceptance criteria
For stripping capability of the jacket on screened cables, the stripping operation shall not exceed 40 s for a suitably skilled operator. For adherence, method A requires the force values to meet the technical specification, while method B requires each measurement to meet the product standard. If one method B value is low, two more measurements are taken and the median of five must meet the product standard.
That means the acceptance limit is not only about the force itself, but also about how the result is confirmed when readings vary.
What changed in kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 from the previous edition?
kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 supersedes EN 3475-701:2017. The foreword lists an editorial revision and two technical clarifications:
- for insulation stripping, the specimen is taken from the finished cable
- for insulation adherence, the specimen is taken from individual wire before integration into a finished cable
These changes help remove ambiguity about where the test piece comes from.
Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026?
kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 cites EN 2812, Aerospace series - Stripping of electric cables. It supplies the stripping tools used for the stripping-related preparation and test steps.
The scope also says the document is intended to be used with EN 3475-100, Aerospace series - Cables, electrical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 100: General. That companion part provides the general test-method framework for this series.
What does the kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 document contain?
kSIST FprEN 3475-701:2026 contains specimen-preparation instructions, two adherence test methods, a stripping-capability method, and acceptance requirements. Figures 1 and 2 show the specimen layouts for method A and method B, including where the insulation is cut and how much is stripped back.
Clause 5 describes the test set-ups, including the calibrated hole, tensile loading, and pulling speed. Clause 6 gives the pass-fail criteria that laboratories and quality teams use for testing and product approval.
