Overview

EN 889:2023 (CEN) is the European standard for iron (II) sulfate (ferrous sulfate) used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. The standard covers both iron (II) sulfate heptahydrate and monohydrate and describes their identification, physical and chemical characteristics, product grades and commercial forms, requirements for purity, and rules for safe handling and use. EN 889:2023 supersedes EN 889:2004 and incorporates updates such as the addition of the monohydrate form and revised safety labelling in line with current EU regulations.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Identification and composition
    • Chemical names, synonyms (ferrous sulfate, iron vitriol, copperas), CAS numbers and formulas for heptahydrate and monohydrate.
  • Commercial forms and physical properties
    • Damp crystals, free-flowing crystals, dry crystals and solutions; appearance, density, solubility and thermal behaviour are specified.
  • Purity and quality criteria
    • Minimum composition and grade definitions to ensure suitability for use in drinking water treatment.
  • Test methods and sampling
    • Sampling and analytical requirements are referenced; EN 889:2023 refers to EN 17215 for iron-based coagulant analytical methods.
  • Labeling, transport and storage
    • Requirements for risk and safety labelling per updated EU rules, transportation regulations, marking and storage conditions (including incompatibilities and long-term stability).
  • Safety and emergency procedures
    • Normative annexes provide rules on safe handling, first aid, spillage response and fire-fighting measures.

Practical applications

  • Water treatment plants (drinking water) - used as an iron-based reagent in coagulation/flocculation and for specific treatment needs where iron salts are appropriate.
  • Chemical suppliers and formulators - to ensure delivered products meet European requirements for composition, form and labelling.
  • Laboratories and QA/QC teams - for sampling, conformity assessment and verification against the specified purity criteria.
  • Health & safety officers - to implement storage, transport and emergency response measures described in the standard.

Note: Conformity with EN 889:2023 does not automatically imply regulatory approval in all EU/EFTA member states; users must also check national regulations and Drinking Water Directive requirements.

Related standards

  • EN 17215 - Analytical methods for iron-based coagulants (normative reference).
  • CEN/TC 164 “Water supply” - technical committee responsible for this standard.
