Overview
EN 13025-2:2005 (CEN) is the European standard for light-gauge metal tight-head (non-removable head) round steel and tinplate containers with nominal capacities of 20 l, 25 l and 30 l. It specifies acceptable materials, construction methods, dimensional limits and closure arrangements for round cylindrical or tapered containers whose steel/tinplate thickness does not exceed 0.49 mm. Recommended dimensions for these nominal volumes are given in Table 1 of the standard.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and capacities: Applies to 20 l, 25 l and 30 l nominal filling volumes (20 000 ml, 25 000 ml, 30 000 ml).
- Material: Body and ends shall be at least steel FePo1 (per EN 10130) or tinplate (per EN 10202).
- Sheet thickness: Maximum steel/tinplate thickness of 0.49 mm with tolerances per EN 10131 (steel) and EN 10202 (tinplate).
- Construction:
- Longitudinal seam: mechanically seamed or welded.
- Body-to-end joining: seamed or other approved joining methods.
- Container shapes: straight-sided or tapered; may include beads, corrugations, necked-in or step-sided designs.
- Closures:
- Primary closures positioned in the top end; plastic plug-in closures may be used if aperture dimensions conform to EN 13029.
- Other closure types (e.g., tinplate screw closures, inserted flange closures per EN 12928) are permitted.
- Plugs must be fitted with suitable washers compatible with contents.
- Dimensions and terminology: Defines overall height, stacking height, internal and external diameters, total (gross) capacity and nominal filling volume.
- Finish and draining:
- Internal/external finishes must suit intended physical and chemical requirements (to be agreed buyer/manufacturer).
- Draining test method referenced in Annex B of EN 13025-1:2005.
Applications and Who Uses It
EN 13025-2 is used by:
- Manufacturers of light-gauge metal drums and cans (design and production).
- Packaging engineers and product designers specifying tight-head containers for liquids and viscous products.
- Fillers and packagers in sectors such as paints & coatings, chemicals, agrochemicals and specialty liquids requiring leak-resistant top closures.
- Quality assurance, procurement teams and conformity assessors who need harmonized dimensional and material requirements for EU markets.
- Test laboratories performing dimensional, sealing and draining checks.
Practical benefits include standardized interchangeability of closures, consistent stacking and handling dimensions, and material/finish guidance to ensure compatibility with product contents.
