Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 47: Determination of the ash content of natural asphalts
This document specifies a test method to determine the ash content in natural asphalts (including lake asphalts), binders containing natural asphalts or bitumens. For the method to apply, it is essential that any mineral matter in the binder be finely divided and cannot exceed a mass fraction of 45 %.
Bituminizirane zmesi - Preskusne metode - 47. del: Ugotavljanje deleža pepela v naravnem asfaltu

Overview
EN 12697-47:2023 (CEN) is a European test method for determining the ash content of natural asphalts (including lake asphalts) and binders containing natural asphalt or bitumen. The standard specifies laboratory procedures for sample preparation, controlled heating/ignition and weighing to quantify inorganic residue (ash) remaining after ignition. It replaces EN 12697-47:2010 and was approved by CEN in July 2023.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies where mineral matter in the binder is finely divided and does not exceed a mass fraction of 45%.
- Sample handling: Sampling guidance references EN 58 (sampling of bituminous binders). Materials crushable at ambient temperature are reduced to pass a 4 mm sieve; non-crushable materials are softened in an oven and stirred to disperse mineral matter.
- Apparatus: Silica, porcelain or platinum crucibles (~120 ± 20 ml), a furnace capable of 650 ± 50 °C, desiccator, gas burner (or electric pre-incinerator), oven for softening, and a balance with max permissible error 0.001 g (weighings to 0.005 g).
- Procedure: Weigh empty crucible, add a sample quantity producing between 0.10 g and 0.35 g ash, pre-incinerate to remove volatiles, ignite at 650 ± 50 °C until carbon-free, and reheat until constant mass is achieved.
- Calculation: Determine ash mass as the inorganic residue (difference between final crucible+ash and empty crucible) and express as a mass proportion (%) of the original sample.
- Precision: Repeatability (same operator) suspect if differing by > 0.3%; reproducibility (different labs) suspect if differing by > 0.9%.
- Reporting: Results to include standard reference, sample ID, sample mass, ash proportion to nearest 0.01%, deviations, observations and test date.
Applications and users
- Quality control for asphalt binders and natural asphalts used in road construction and pavement materials.
- Materials testing laboratories performing binder characterization and specification compliance.
- Asphalt producers and pavement engineers assessing mineral filler content or verifying lake asphalt composition.
- Procurement and specification authors who require standardized ash-content data for performance or durability evaluations.
