Overview
EN 71-14:2014/FprA1 is a CEN European Standard that specifies safety requirements and test methods for trampolines for domestic use, including their access devices and enclosures. It applies to trampolines intended for above-ground indoor and/or outdoor domestic use by one person at a time. The standard supports essential requirements of EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC and is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories and conformity assessors.
The standard excludes:
- gymnastic equipment trampolines (EN 13219),
- floating inflatable trampolines (EN 15649 series),
- public playground trampolines,
- inclined mat and inflatable trampolines,
- fitness/medical trampolines,
- trampolines with additional features (e.g. tents, hoops),
- domestic trampolines buried at ground level.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and classification of domestic trampolines (mini, medium, large) and components (frame, mat, suspension, enclosures, access devices).
- Test methods that verify structural integrity, durability and safe performance under static and dynamic loads.
- Mat deflection test (amendment prA1) - updated calculation of test loads:
- Mini trampolines: test load = 2.5 × maximum user weight
- Medium and large trampolines: test load = 5 × maximum user weight
- Rationale for deflection coefficient: the 5× factor aligns with existing standards (EN 913, EN 13219 and AS 4989:2015) to ensure the mat does not contact the ground under realistic rebound conditions.
- Design guidance: notes that medium/large trampolines commonly have minimum frame heights ~600 mm and lowering frame height can force suspension hardening, affecting mat flexibility and potentially increasing musculoskeletal risks for light users (children). Manufacturers must incorporate these findings into safety assessments.
Applications and Who Uses This Standard
- Manufacturers and designers - to design domestic trampolines, enclosures and access devices that meet safety and test criteria.
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to perform mat deflection and other performance tests required for compliance and CE marking.
- Retailers and purchasers - to evaluate product safety features and documentation.
- Regulators and product safety professionals - to reference for market surveillance and alignment with the Toy Safety Directive.
